Gyeongju Namsan

경주 남산에 수많은 불상이 조성되어 있다는 것은 공간적으로 큰 의미를 지니고 있지만, 이 불상들이 동시에 조성된 것이 아니라 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 조성된 것이기 때문에 그 변화과정을 살펴볼 수 있다는 점에서 시간적으로도 큰 의미를 지닌다. 남산을 걷는다는 것은 ‘산’이라는 공간을 걷는 것임과 동시에 ‘신라’라는 시간을 걷는 것이기도 하다.

경주 남산은 선사시대부터 오랫동안 기도의 성지로서 받들어져 왔다. 고인돌, 알터, 윷판바위가 있고 숱한 불교문화재가 흩어져 있다. 이름 모를 석상과 민불, 산신당도 있다. 불교가 들어오든, 유교가 들어오든 기도의 간절함이 끊어져 본 적이 없다. 그러한 기도와 염원의 흔적이 온 산을 별처럼 수 놓고 있다. 경주 남산은 바로 그런 산이다.

‘집 반, 절 반’이라 불렸던 경주 시내의 화려함과 대비되는 곳이 경주 남산이다. 대궐 같은 시내의 사찰에 머물던 수행자들이 수행처를 찾아 나서 다다른 곳이 남산이지 않았을까? 신라의 시조 박혁거세가 태어난 나정과 신라 패망의 현장으로 알려진 비운의 장소 포석정이 있는 곳, 경주 남산으로 들어가 보자.

The fact that there are numerous Buddha statues in Namsan Mountain has great significance in terms of space, but it also has huge importance of time-wise as these Buddha statues were not created simultaneously but over a long period of time so that the process of modification can be observed. Therefore, walking Namsan means to walk in a space called 'mountain' and in a time called 'Silla' at the same time.

Namsan in Gyeongju, has been worshiped as a holy place of prayer since prehistoric times. There are dolmens, alteos, and Yutpanbawi Rock, and numerous Buddhist cultural assets are scattered not to mention unknown stone statues, folk Buddhas, and Sansindang. Regardless of Buddhism or Confucianism, prayers’ earnestness has never ceased. Traces of such prayers and aspirations are embroidered all over the mountain like stars. Gyeongju Namsan is just such a mountain.

Namsan Mountain is a place that contrasts with the splendor of downtown Gyeongju, which was called 'Half house, half temple'. Take a step to Namsan Mountain where Najeong, the birthplace of Silla's founder Park Hyeokgeose and Poseokjeong Pavilion, a site of misfortune where Silla was defeated, are located.
