사울 레이터는 사진의 역사에서 예술로 인정받지 못했던 컬러 사진의 자리를 확고히 한 미국의 사진가다. 뉴욕 맨해튼 도심을 배경으로 한 거리 사진, 은밀한 초상과 누드 사진을 평생 동안 찍었고, 이십여 년간 『에스콰이어』 『하퍼스 바자』 『엘르』 등의 다양한 잡지와 일하며 패션 사진가로서 명성을 떨쳤다.
그의 사진에는 거리에서만 발견할 수 있는 즉흥성과 대체 불가능한 에너지들이 가득하다. 덮개와 프레임으로 활용되는 창문이나 거울, 유리창에 반사되고 겹쳐지는 사물들, 회화적인 요소를 더하는 눈과 비, 사람과 분리되어 춤추는 듯한 우산 등은 그의 사진에 반복적으로 등장하는 모티프로, 대다수의 작가 들이 주목했던 현란한 도시가 아닌, 고요하고 오묘한 뉴욕의 거리를 만들어낸다. 무엇을 보고 있는지 확신할 수 없는 이 모호한 이미지들은 천천히 우리의 시선을 이끌어 명상에 가까운 경지로 빠져들게 한다.
이 책은 사울 레이터 재단의 부이사장이자 약 이십 년간 편집자로 일했던 마이클 파릴로의 작가론으로 시작해, 다루는 주제와 스타일에 따라 네 가지 시리즈로 묶어 선별한 사진 81점을 소개한다. 2017년 사울 레이터 재단과 처음 접촉하여 사진문고 출간을 제안한 이후, 오랜 숙고와 논의 끝에 현재 한국에서 열리고 있는 전시에 맞춰 국영문판을 동시에 선보이게 되었다.
Saul Leiter was an American photographer who worked in black and white and in color. He captured the majority of his images, whether street photographs or nudes and intimate portraits, in his downtown Manhattan neighborhood. Leiter is considered a pioneer because with his first monograph, Early Color (2006), he changed the conversation on the history of color photography. Leiter also built a successful fashion career starting in the 1950s, in magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, and like his street work his fashion photographs feature dramatic compositions and the clever use of reflection. Depicting a quieter and more mysterious New York than the frenetic city found in most artists’ visions, Leiter used windows and mirrors to mask or abstract images, incorporating painterly elements and a muted color palette. His photographs slow down the viewer into a mindful, meditative state.
