『고문진보』는 송나라 말에서 원나라 초, 학자 황견(黃堅)이 편집한 ‘고문(古文) 중에 진실로 보배가 될 만한 글을 모은 것’이라는 뜻으로, 고문과 인격과 학식을 닦기 위한 대중적인 교재를 말한다. ‘고문’이란 중국 위진(魏晉) 시대에 성행하던 ‘기교주의 문장에 반대’하여 일어났던, 당송(唐宋) 고문운동가들이 주장하던 ‘고대부터 한대(漢代)까지의 질박하면서도 도덕적이며, 유가적 색채를 지닌 훌륭한 문체’를 뜻한다. 이것이 참다운 인생 지혜가 아니랴.

중국송나라말에서원나라초의학자이다.그의생애는제대로알려진것이없고,<고문진보>외에다른성과물을남겼다는기록도없다.

문장학의보고!고전의참맛을누려라!

이책은진한(秦漢)시대의문장과당송팔대가(唐宋八大家),즉한유,유종원,구양수,소순,소식,소철,증공,왕안석의문장을주로가려뽑았고,그밖에송대이학가(理學家)의문장이주를이룬다.남송때의이학가들은문예를경시하고고문을중시했다.신유학(新儒學)이북송초부터유행하기시작하면서,그사상을전달하기에는고문이적합한것으로생각했기때문이다.
전편과후편으로나누어,전편은운문위주로「권학문(勸學文)」을비롯하여소박하고고아한고시를주로수록하였고,후집은산문인17체의명문을실었다.
《경전(經典)》이빈틈없는논리와철학을주제로한것이라면,《사서(史書)》는인간활동의바른길과이야기중심의연결고리를알아야만한다.그런데고문(古文)은다양한작자의문장을통해이모두를이해할수있다.때문에독자는여기에실린시와문장,특히당송팔대가산문들을읽으며옛성인들의지혜를오롯이되새길수있다.

한문공부의금과옥조인생백과≪고문진보≫

오늘날우리가접하고있는《고문진보》는황견이후여러사람의손을거쳐증감되고,개정된것으로초기원본은아니다.나아가송,명,청대를거쳐이름난학자들에의해전문적이며학술적인고문에대한연구와선집등이널리출현하면서,이《고문진보》는차츰빛을잃게되어중국에서는잊히다시피하였다.그럼에도한국과일본에서는근세까지도고문학습의가장중요한책으로널리활용되어왔다.
특히우리선조들은《고문진보》를한문공부의금과옥조로여겼다.“아침에는경서를,저녁에는역사를공부하고,왼쪽에는시를끼고,오른쪽에는문장을들고”(朝經暮史,左詩右文)학습하던조선시대의학습풍토에서초보적인시문을공부하는학습자라면바로이책을필수교재로삼았음을알수있다.
그런까닭에조선시대학자라면개인문집에이책을언급하지않은이들이없을정도였다.《어우야담》에서는“우리나라에서어린이들의배움은대개《십구사략》과《고문진보》를익히는것으로학문에들어서는문으로삼았다.”고기록하고있다.특히김시습은‘《고문진보》를구하고나서’(<득고문진보(得古文眞寶)>《매월당집(梅月堂集)》(9))이라는시에서이렇게기쁨을노래하기도했다.

“세상에서구슬을보물인양속이며다투지만,
이는다쓰고나면남는것이없지.
이《고문진보》를만약뱃속에간직할수만있다면,
가슴속에혼연히쨍그랑옥소리울리리라.”

풍부하여즐거운해설완역판≪고문진보≫!

《고문진보》는일본과한국에전하는판본이각각다르다.일본에는괴본(魁本,元版本)이,우리나라에는대전(大全,明版本)이전해져조선시대널리활용되었으며,우리나라에전하는《상설고문진보대전》은일본판본보다훨씬양이많고내용이풍부하며조선시대학자는물론일반인까지도누구나인용하고익혀온,가장영향력이컸던텍스트였다.이에언해본도있어서,끊임없이출간되기도하였으며,현대에이르러서는초역(抄譯),선역(選譯)등이쏟아졌고,나아가완역본도출간되었다.이책은전체를완역하면서동시에그간혹빠지기도했던참고자료를충분히활용하고,아울러주석을자세히실음으로써관련사항을세세하게짚어볼수있도록작업하였다.또한각주를더욱세밀히하고,음운적인면까지분석하였으며,작품의원출처를일일이찾아대조하고제시한점도큰장점으로꼽을수있다.
