Eunice(Yoo-soon)Ohisapharmacist,businessowner,andphilanthropistknownforhercontributionsandleadershipinnumerousnonprofitorganizationsandcommunityinitiatives,bothlocallyandinternationally.Herpublicservicehasearnedherprestigiousrecognition,includingvisitstotheBlueHouseinSeoulandtheParliamentinOttawatoreceiveawardsfromthegovernmentsofSouthKoreaandCanada.OriginallyfromSouthKorea,EuniceimmigratedtoCanadain1971alongsideherhusband,KangnamOh.Together,theyhaveraisedthreesons,welcomedtwodaughters-in-law,andareproudgrandparentstofourgrandsons.CurrentlyresidinginPortMoody,BritishColumbia,Eunicecontinuestomakeapositiveandenduringimpactonhercommunity,demonstratingthemeaningfuldifferencethatoneindividualcanmakeinshapingabetterworld.

EffortstorepatriateKoreanswerethwartedbyJapaneseinterference,andinthewhirlwindofhistory,KoreanslivedinCubaforsixgenerationswithouteverreturningtotheirhomeland.Nowadays,manyCubansofKoreandescenthaveintermarriedwithCubansandassimilated,makingitdifficulttodistinguishbetweenCubanandKorean.YettheystillholdaffectionfortheirKoreanheritageandprideintheiridentity.AsIwatchedthemsingArirangandstruggletospeakwhatlittleKoreantheycouldremember,Ifeltastrongsenseoftogethernessandunitythatisdifficulttoarticulate.

Iwasblindlyimmersedintheteachingsofthechurch,butmyhusband,ascholarofreligion,thoughtinadifferentway.Heemphasizedthatoneshouldbecomeabelieverofprofoundreligion,notasurface-levelreligion.Heawakenedmetotheimportanceofnotbeingboundbyformalitiessuchasdoctrinesanddogmas,tobreakfreefrommypreconceivednotionsandthusattainenlightenment.Evenwhilehecontinuedtoattendchurchwithmefollowingourmarriage,hewouldworkhardtochangemyfixedideasaboutthechurch.Sometimes,whenIwassleeping,Iwouldhearhimtalkingferventlynexttome,andwhenIaskedhimwhathewasdoing,hesaidhewasteachingtruereligiontomysubconscious.

Withoutadoubt,thechurchandtheBibleformthecornerstoneofmyexistence.AlthoughIinitiallyattendedchurchbecauseofmyparents,myencounterswithinthechurchhavemoldedmyworldview,mentality,approachtowardslife,andprinciples,allofwhichstillanchormetoday.ThroughmyjourneyinunderstandingGod’slove,Ihavecultivatedtrustandaffectionforothers,andfoundaclearpurposeandpathformylife.
