『조병화 시선』은 2012년 현재까지 국내 시인들 중 가장 많은 개인 창작 시집으로 기록되어 있는 시인 조병화의 폭넓은 문학 세계를 98편의 시에 압축해 실었다. 그는 1949년 첫 번째 시집 ≪버리고 싶은 유산≫을 통해 문단에 나왔고, 데뷔 이후 첫 시집에서부터 마지막 시집 ≪넘을 수 없는 세월≫까지 무려 53권의 창작 시집을 발표했다.

조병화

저자조병화(趙炳華,1921∼2003)는1921년5월2일경기도안성군양성면난실리에서부친조두원(趙斗元)과모친진종(陳鍾)사이에서5남2녀중막내로태어났다.그는미동공립보통학교(渼洞公立普通學校)를거쳐1943년3월경성사범학교(京城師範學校)보통과및연습과를졸업했다.같은해4월일본동경고등사범학교(東京高等師範學校)이과에입학해물리,화학을수학했으며,이후1945년일본동경고등사범학교물리화학과3학년재학도중귀국했다.1945년9월부터경성사범학교에서물리를가르치면서교단생활을시작해인천중학교(仁川中學校,6년제)교사,서울중학교(6년제)교사로재직했다.1949년제1시집≪버리고싶은유산(遺産)≫을출간하며시인의길로들어서게된다.이후중앙대학교,연세대학교등에서시론을강의했으며,1959년서울고등학교를사직하고경희대학교조교수를시작으로부교수·교수를지내게된다.1972년경희대학교문리대학장,경희대학교교육대학원장을역임했고,1981년인하대학교문과대학장,1982년도엔인하대학교대학원장과부총장으로재직했다.1986년8월31일정년퇴직을하기전까지이와같은교육자로서의공적과문학사에남긴커다란업적을인정받아중화학술원(中華學術院)에서명예철학박사,중앙대학교와캐나다빅토리아대학교에서명예문학박사학위를받게된다.또한아세아문학상(1957),한국시인협회상(1974),서울시문화상(1981),대한민국예술원상(1985),3·1문화상(1990),대한민국문학대상(1992),대한민국금관문화훈장(1996),5·16민족상(1997)그리고세계시인대회에서여러상과감사패를받았다.국내문단에서도한국시인협회회장,한국문인협회이사장,대한민국예술원회장을역임하면서동시에세계시인대회국제이사,제4차세계시인대회(서울,1979)대회장을역임했다.그는세계시인대회에한국대표또는단장으로서수차례에걸쳐참석했으며,이대회에서추대된계관시인(桂冠詩人)이기도하다.또한국제P.E.N.이사로1970년국제P.E.N.서울대회에서재정위원장을맡기도했다.시뿐만이아니라그림에도조예가깊어유화전8회,시화전5회,시화?유화전5회등여러차례초대전을갖기도했다.

□출판사책소개
지식을만드는지식‘초판본한국근현대시선’은점점사라져가는원본을재출간하겠다는기획의도에따라한국문학평론가협회에서작가100명을엄선하고각각의작가에대해권위를인정받은평론가들을엮은이로추천했다.엮은이는직접작품을선정하고원전을찾아냈으며해설과주석을덧붙였다.
각작품들은초판본을수정없이그대로타이핑해서실었다.초판본을구하지못한작품은원전에가장근접한것을사용했다.저본에실린표기를그대로살렸고,오기가분명한경우만바로잡았다.단,띄어쓰기는읽기편하게현대의표기법에맞춰고쳤다.

시인조병화에게보고듣고느낀모든것은곧,시였다.그는스스로의말처럼“살아있는시인으로살아있는시를쓰고있어야한다”고믿었으며,평생‘말의힘’을찾기위해시를읽고썼다.그의시가주목받는이유중하나는인생의가장근원적인문제에대한탐구를멈추지않았다는것이다.첫번째시집부터마지막시집까지수천편이넘는시편들속에서도그는줄기차게생의본질과근원을놓치지않으려는모습을보인다.
