Description
Folk paintings portray the simple and unaffected daily lives of ordinary people. An invaluable part of Korea’s cultural heritage, folk paintings illustrate the mythology, religion, and mindset of the Korean people. They are also the artistic expression of people who drew paintings to decorate their houses and to celebrate auspicious family occasions, such as weddings or sixtieth birthdays.

Folk paintings are far from being sophisticated art. Rather, they are a popular art form that allows anyone to appreciate and enjoy them. Therefore, appreciating folk paintings does not require much effort. Instead, it is sufficient simply to imagine what life was like in the past. As we gain a deeper understanding of them, it readily becomes clear that humour and satire were prominent elements in Korean folk paintings, which tells us something of the times and attitudes of the artists who created them. Unlike orthodox and formal paintings such as sagunja (paintings of Four Gentlemen: plum blossom, bamboo, orchid and chrysanthemum) and sumukhwa (paintings in ink monochrome) which were created for purely artistic appreciation, folk paintings are informal artwork that represent people’s thoughts and emotions. Therefore, folk paintings tend to evoke profound empathy and familiarity in the observer.
