마을의전통은역사발전과더불어일관되게지속되기도하지만때로는변형되거나소멸되기도한다.특히급격한현대화물결에의한서구문명제일주의는우리의전통적요소를부정적으로바라보게함으로써소멸의길을재촉해온것이현실이다.이책은우리의전통에대한절대적가치를인정하면서장구한세월속에서마을의전통이현재까지유지되고있는거주공간을찾아위치ㆍ형태ㆍ기능등다양한기준에의거하여그고유의성격과구조적특색을밝혀내고있다.

먼저1장에서는역대왕조의도성들이통치이념이나사상적체계에맞추어어떻게조성되었으며발전하고쇠퇴하였는지살펴본다.2장에서는서울주변에형성된별궁마을과종묘마을,생원마을,묘지기마을등을기능에따라각각의특성과역할에대해알아본다.3장은지방통치거점으로조성된읍성마을,4장은교통과군사기능이두드러지는포구나나루및병영마을,그리고5장에서는제사나종교기능과관련된사당마을등이조성된근원을역사적으로고찰한다.마지막으로6장에서는입지조건에따라농촌마을과산촌마을,어촌마을을형성하면서우리조상들이어떻게자연을극복하고주변환경과조화를이루면서삶을영위해왔는지보여준다.
