대행큰스님은여러면에서매우보기드문선사禪師셨다.무엇보다선사라면당연히비구스님을떠올리는전통속에서여성으로서선사가되었으며,비구스님들을제자로두었던유일한비구니스님이었고,노년층여성이주된신도계층을이루었던한국불교에젊은세대의청장년층남녀들을대거참여하게만들어한국불교에새로운풍격風格을일으키는데일조한큰스승이셨다.또한어느누구나마음수행을통해깨달을수있음을강조하며전통적인수행모델과는달리삭발제자와유발제자를가리지않고법을구하는이들에게는모두똑같이가르침을주셨고,전통비구니강원과비구니종단에대한지속적인지원을펼치심으로써비구니승단을발전시키는데중추적인역할을하셨다.
대행큰스님은1927년서울에서태어나일찍이9세경에자성을밝히시고,일제강점기와6.25전쟁을거치면서당신이증득證得하신바를완성하기위해오랫동안산중에서수행하셨다.1950년대말경,치악산상원사근처에있는한움막에머무르시며찾아오는수많은사람들의고통스러운호소를들으시고그들을도와주셨다.중생들이가지고오는어떠한문제도,어떠한어려운상황도해결이되도록도와주신대행큰스님의자비의원력은당시에이미한국에서는전설이되어있었다.스님은자비를물마른웅덩이에서죽어가는물고기를살리는방생에비유하셨다.그래서집세가없어셋집에서쫓겨난사람들에게집을마련해주고,학비가없어서학교를마칠수없는학생들에게학비를대주셨지만,스님의자비행慈悲行을아는사람은거의없을정도였다.
그러나,문제를해결해주면그때뿐또다른문제가닥쳐오면속수무책이되어버리고마는사람들을보며,스님께서는중생들이자신들의문제를스스로해결하고,나아가인과와윤회의굴레에서벗어나자유인이될수있는도리를가르치는것이더시급하다는생각을하게되었다.
마침내산에서내려온스님께서는1972년경기도안양에한마음선원을설립하셨고,이후40여년동안한마음선원에주석하시며,크고작은법회에서질문을해오는사람들에게그들의근기와여건에맞추어답을해주시며불법의진리를가르쳐주셨다.스님은여러다양한사회복지프로그램을후원하셨고,6개국에9개의국외지원과국내15개의지원을세우셨다.또한스님의가르침은영어,독어,스페인어,러시아어,중국어,일본어,불어,이태리어,베트남어,인도네시아어등으로번역출간되었다.스님은2012년5월22일,세납86세로입적하셨으며법랍63세셨다.

DaehaengKunSunimwasarareteacherinKorea:afemaleseon(zen)master,anunwhoalsotaughtmonks,andateacherwhohelpedrevitalizeKoreanBuddhismbydramaticallyincreasingtheparticipationofyoungpeopleandmen.
Shemadelaypeopleaparticularfocusofherefforts,andbrokeoutoftraditionalmodelsofspiritualpracticetoteachinsuchawaythatanyonecouldpracticeandawaken.Atthesametime,shewasamajorforcefortheadvancementofBhikkunis(nuns),heavilysupportingtraditionalnuns’colleges,aswellasthemodernBhikkunicouncilofKorea.
BorninSeoul,Korea,in1927,sheawakenedwhenshewasaroundeightyearsold,andspenttheyearsafterwardslearningtoputherunderstandingintopractice.Foryears,shewanderedthemountainsofKorea,wearingaraggedsetofclothesandeatingonlywhatwasathand.Yearslater,sheexplainedthatshehadn’tbeenpursuingsometypeofasceticism;rather,shewasjustcompletelyabsorbedinentrustingeverythingtoherfundamentalBuddhaessence,andobservinghowthataffectedwhatsheentrusted.
Thisgreatlyaffectedherteachingstylelater,forshecouldclearlyseethegreatpotential,energy,andwisdominherentwithineachofus,butsawthatpeoplesufferedbecausetheydon’tknowaboutthis,andinsteadwerelookingoutsideofthemselves.Clearlyseeingthegreatlightweeachhave,shetaughtpeopletorelyuponthisinherentfoundation,andrefusedtoteachanythingthatdistractedpeoplefromthat.
HerdeepcompassionmadeheralegendinKorealongbeforesheformallystartedteachingpeople.Shewasknownforhavingthespiritualpowertohelppeopleinallcircumstancesandwitheverykindofproblem.Shecomparedcompassiontofreeingafishfromadryingpuddle,puttingahomelessfamilyintoahome,orprovidingtheschoolfeesthatwouldallowastudenttofinishhighschool.Andwhenshedidthingslikethis,andmuchmore,fewknewthatshewasbehindit.
DaehaengKunSunimclearlysawthatforpeopletolivefreelyandtogoforwardasablessingtoallaroundthem,theyneededtoknowaboutthisbrightessencewithineachofus.Tohelppeoplediscoverthisforthemselves,shefoundedthefirstHanmaumSeonCenterin1972.Forthenextfortyyears,shegavewisdomtothosewhoneededwisdom,foodandmoneytothosewhowerepoorandhungry,andcompassiontothosewhowerehurting.WhenshepassedawayonMay21,2012,shehadfounded24centersinsixcountriesaroundtheworld,andherteachingshavebeentranslatedintotenlanguages.
