Description

Everyday Renewal in Troubled Times
This new, 21st volume of the Practice in Daily Life series continues a journey with readers that began over twenty years ago.
Presented as a bilingual edition, this book features the original Dharma talk delivered by Seon Master Daehaeng during a regular gathering on March 17, 1996.

Freeing ourselves from the prison of our mental constructs and discovering the light within

This book serves as a practical guide for those facing suffering and hardship in the ever-changing modern world. Highlighting the harmony between the spiritual and material realms, Seon Master Daehaeng presents the principle of the interconnected functioning of the whole, along with the possibilities this creates for our spiritual evolution.
Seon Master Daehaeng shows us how we can discover the interconnected functioning of the world and not only make use of this to alleviate our own suffering, but also to awaken spiritually. She highlights that all of the things we normally cling to are actually just passing phenomena, no more substantial than a passing breeze. So instead of clinging to those, we can trust this inherent foundation that we all have, entrusting everything we are going through to it. As we do so, the whole responds to us.

Seon Master Daehaeng (1927-2012):
Seon Master Daehaeng was one of the outstanding masters of modern Korean Buddhism. She realized her inherent nature at a young age, and spent over ten years in the mountains applying and experimenting with what she had awakened to.
Around the late 1950s, after finishing her mountain meditation practice, she stayed in a small hut near Sangwonsa Temple in Chiaksan Mountains, where she helped countless people overcome their suffering.
In order to teaching people how to resolve their own problems and become free from the cycle of life and death, she established the Hanmaum Seon Center in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, in 1972. For more than 40 years, she devoted herself to teaching people how to rely upon and discover their own fundamental mind, and how to apply it in daily life. Currently, over 100 sunims practice at the Hanmaum Seonwon in Anyang and 24 domestic and overseas branches, working to provide a place where anyone can come and learn.

The great change within us begins the moment we let go!
Just as we cannot grasp the wind,
don’t struggle to hold what is leaving,
nor to block what is coming.
Entrust it all inwardly
and let it connect with the whole.
True evolution comes when
we use our mind wisely like this.

Another inspiring Dharma talk by Seon Master Daehaeng, delivered in plain, everyday language.
It introduces the core of spiritual practice in a way that even beginners can easily follow, guiding us to trust our fundamental mind and teaching us how to let go, entrust, and observe.

The Journey Toward a Liberated Life: Discover Three Essential Keys
1. Encountering our Inner True Nature
Each of us possesses the root of all life that connects us to all things. Seon Master Daehaeng calls this our foundation, the “true doer,” (Juingong in Korean). So this is where we need to return all the karmic connections of our life to. When we let go of the urge that insists on “I” and entrust everything to our foundation, a freedom without constraints begins.

2. Daily Life as a Place of Practice
Spiritual practice is not found in a special location, nor is there a need to seek out extraordinary methods. Every moment of daily life ? eating, working, and interacting with others ? is the material for study and a precious form of practice. Just as one lets a breeze pass by naturally, without trying to catch it, we need to learn how to let the flow of likes and dislikes, judgments, and desires pass by freely, without trying to cling to them.

3. The Evolution of Mind and Higher-Dimensional Working Together as the Interconnected One Whole
Humanity has reached the point where we must move beyond an ever-increasing focus on material abundance, and evolve our mental and spiritual dimensions. When we work at living in tune with our inner connection with the whole, we come realize that there is nothing that is not “me.” And as we evolve our understanding and application of this, we begin to apply the energy and wisdom of the whole to the people and situations we encounter. In so doing, as we become one with everything we encounter, our own spiritual dimension deepens and we are able to see farther and more inclusively, which in turn leads to broader and deeper application.

We invite everyone to experience the essence of living Seon, where every moment of life is the practice of enlightenment.

No matter how much people try to cling to those things, there’s nothing there to grasp. …so why not live peacefully and generously, flowing like a gently breeze? p.29

Don’t get caught up in words. Awaken through the stuff of your daily life. You are here, so others respond to you, and you experience the world as it unfolds around you. Yous daily life is the result of this interaction, so live wisely and freely life the wind, flowing unhindered every moment, letting go of everything and manifesting according to circumstances. p.41.

Imagine you’re hungry, but there’s food sitting on high shelf. You have to grow taller or find a chair to reach it. Visible things can be reached with visible tools, but to reach this invisible energy, we have to raise our spiritual dimension. p. 65.

You have the ability to make any path in front of you become a good path. p.97.
