전남 곡성에서 태어나 전남대학교에서 영어영문학을 전공했고 동 대학원에서 영어교육학을 공부하며 중등교사로 재직하다 퇴직했다. 교육 현장에 근무하던 중 교육계의 비리를 맨몸으로 맞은 후 시민운동에 뛰어들었다. 홀로 외치는 자의 한계를 절감하며 대중들과 공감대를 형성하고자 오마이뉴스 시민기자가 되어 1,300여 개의 글을 썼다. 내친김에 시민단체 공동대표를 겸하며 뜻있는 지인들과 힘을 합쳐 여수 지역언론사인 여수넷통뉴스를 창간해 2대 대표를 역임했다. 현재는 목포대학교 도서문화연구원으로 지내며 글을 쓰고 있다.
