연세대학교사학과를졸업하고같은대학원에서석사와박사학위를받았다.35년간상명대학교역사콘텐츠학과교수로재직했으며,2022년2월정년퇴임한후명예교수로있다.재직중에는학장,평생교육원장,특성화사업단장을역임했다.역사와관련된사회적이슈가제기될때마다,언론매체나SNS를통해대중의눈높이에서소통하는작업을이어가고있다.

검정역사교과서를대표하는집필자로활동해왔고,국정역사교과서저지의선봉장역할을했다는평가를받았다.서울시교육청의역사교육위원장으로서역사교육의패러다임을바꾸기위해노력했다.현재국무총리산하제주4.3사건진상규명및희생자명예회복위원회위원이며,추가진상조사분과위원장을맡고있다.역사콘텐츠라는개념을창시하였고,다양한문화콘텐츠의기획및제작과정에참여했다.특히역사를소재로한여러영화에자문역할을하였으며,다수의역사방송프로그램에출연했다.남성교수로서는최초로‘한국여성사’교양강의를개설해역사학의지평을넓히는데매진했다.

박사학위논문「19세기후반개화개혁론의구조와전개-독립협회를중심으로」를비롯해「청년기이승만의언론,정치활동해외활동」,「뉴라이트의식민사관부활프로젝트」등의논문을썼다.저서로는『주진오의한국현재사』,『한국여성사깊이읽기』(공저),『한국근대사1』(공저)등이있다.
