조선선조때명의이자자연철학자.서자출신이었으나의학공부에매진한결과어의의자리까지올랐다.선조가의서편찬을지시하자팀을꾸리고작업에돌입했으나임진왜란이라는변수를만나팀이해체되고계획이꼬였다.선조까지죽자귀양길에올라야했다.이귀양지에서『동의보감』을완성했다(집필기간만장장14년).원래의학외에도책읽고글쓰는것을좋아하던학자였던그는동아시아의학사의최고봉들이총망라되어있는『동의보감』외에도『언해구급방』,『언해두창집요』등많은저서를남겼다.

‘동의보감’은선조와광해군의주치의였던허준(1539-1615)이우리민족의전통의학과동아시아의학을집대성해편찬한의학서.허준은선조의명을받아1610년집필을완료했으며책은3년뒤인1613년간행됐다.‘동의보감’은의학서적으로는유일하게2009년7월유네스코세계기록유산에등재되었다.

The25-volumeencyclopediaontheprinciplesofKoreanmedicine,asstudieduptotheearly17thcentury,containsdetailedexplanationsofthecausesanddiagnosesofavarietyofdiseases,howtomakemedicines,howusethemtotreatillnesses,andknowledgeaboutacupunctureandmoxibustion.
TheDonguiBogam,whichiswidelyregardedasthemostcomprehensiveAsianbookontraditionalmedicine,waslistedontheMemoryoftheWorldRegisterinrecognitionofitscontributiontothedevelopmentoftraditionalmedicineinEastAsia,andthefactthateventodayitremainsofinestimableusefromboththeacademicandclinicalperspectives.
ThissignificanteventwillencouragemanypeopletotakemoreinterestinKoreantraditionalmedicineandhaveapositiveeffectonthedevelopmentoftheKoreantraditionalmedicineindustry,whichiscurrentlyfacedwithvariousdifficulties.
Inthe21stcentury,variousdiseases,particularlyadultandgeriatricdiseasesandnewepidemics,poseagravethreattohumanhealthamidrapidchangesinpeople’slifestyles,althoughthreatsfrombetterknowndiseasescommonlycausedbymalnutritionareonthedecrease.Undersuchcircumstances,thegovernmentsofmanycountriesareseekingwaystoimprovepublichealthandwelfarebasedonmodernresearchintotraditionalmedicinesandthepromotionoftherelevantindustries.
Peopleworldwidehavedevelopedgreaterinterestineasterntraditionalmedicine,whichcouldhelpmakeupforsomeofthelimitationsofwesternmedicine,andthustherelevantindustrialareashavecontinuedtoexperiencegrowth.Thus,itisanopportunetimetointroducetheEnglishversionoftheDonguiBogamtothewiderworld.
Theyearof2013isthe400thanniversaryyearsincethepublicationofthefirsteditionoftheDonguiBogam.TheworkoftranslatingandintroducingtheDonguiBogamintoEnglishwillbeamonumentalachievement.
