저자데이비드허버트로런스(DavidHerbertLawrence,1885∼1930)는영국의소설가,시인,극작가,수필가,문학비평가,화가.그는1885년9월11일영국중부의탄광촌인노팅엄셔(Nottinghamshire)의이스트우드(Eastwood)에서,정식교육을받은적이없어글을거의읽을줄모르지만쾌활하고활력적이며춤과노래에재주가많은광부인아버지아서존로런스(ArthurJohnLawrence)와전직교사였으며청교도적인어머니리디아비어졸(LydiaBeardsall)사이에서다섯명의자녀중넷째아이이자막내아들로태어났다.학력이나교양,문화적인면에서현저한차이가나던부모사이의긴장감,그에게“내마음속의시골”이라는배경을형성하도록해준이곳에서의어린시절,그리고노동자계급에속하는그의계층의식은그의작품에투영되어있다.
1910년,그의첫번째소설≪하얀공작≫이출간되었다.그리고그해12월9일에연인이자정신적지주처럼그와밀접한관계를유지해오던그의어머니가암에걸려오랫동안투병해오다가죽었다.어머니의죽음은그의소설≪아들과연인≫에나오는모렐부인(Mrs.Morell)의죽음처럼그가말할수없는좌절을겪으며아픈세월을보내도록했다.하지만로런스는어머니의죽음으로인해큰충격을받아중병을앓으면서도이를버티기위한정신적인위안제로≪아모레즈(Amores)≫,≪사랑의시(LovePoemsandothers)≫,≪새로운시(NewPoems)≫에실린대부분의연애시를집필했다.
1912년그는노팅엄대학시절의은사인위클리(Weekley)교수에게취직을부탁하러갔다가운명의여인인위클리교수의부인프리다(Frieda)를만나게되었다.그녀는그보다여섯살연상인데다가어린세아이의어머니로,독일남작프리드리히폰리히토펜(FriedrichvonRichthofen)의딸이었다.그들은서로만나자마자사랑에빠져영국을떠나독일로사랑의도피행을갔다.그들은프랑스국경과접한독일의한지방에묵었는데,그는이때영국의스파이라는죄목으로체포되지만,프리다아버지의도움으로풀려났다.이후그들은밀월여행을하면서알프스산을넘어리바까지도보여행을하는데,로런스는이과정에서시집≪보라,우리는이겨냈도다(Look!WeHaveComeThrough)≫의사랑시들을썼다.1914년프리다가위클리교수와정식으로이혼을하자로런스는그녀와정식으로결혼했으며,이해에≪무지개(TheRainbow)≫를출간했지만,곧비도덕적이고외설적이라는이유로발매중지를당했고,로런스는외설작가로낙인이찍혔다.
1928년에≪채털리부인의사랑(LadyChatterley'sLover)≫이미국과이탈리아의피렌체,프랑스의파리에서출간되었지만,이작품은그에게외설작가라는악명을더해주었다.영국신문들은이작품을외설물이라고공박했으며,이소설의해적판이미국에서나돌지경에이르렀고,영국경시청은소설≪채털리부인의사랑≫과1929년에출간된시집≪팬지(Pansies)≫를압수했다.그러나로런스는이러한온갖고난과질병에도불구하고스위스,독일,프랑스,스페인등으로옮겨다니며계속해서작품을썼는데,그가말년에쓴≪마지막시집(LastPoems)≫은그의최고의시적인성취를보여주고있으며,그의최후의소설인≪도망간수탉(TheEscapedCock)≫[후에≪죽었던사나이(TheManWhoDied)≫로개정]은그의작품의주요기저인삶의철학,남녀사이의육체적인유대로부활에버금가는생명력을되찾는다는신조를보여주고있다.
로런스는1930년폐병이심해져의사의강력한권고로프랑스남부의방스에있는요양원에들어가있다가요양원에서나온다음날인3월2일에이탈리아베네치아의빌라로버몬드(VillaRobermond)에서죽었다.
인간을비인간화하는현대문명과산업주의를비판하고정서적인건강과활력,본능,자발성등을중요시한로런스는평생에걸쳐그의개인적인고상한철학을계속해서발전시켰다.비록이러한그의견해는당대에대중과공공기관으로부터많은비난을받았지만,시간이흐르면서앞서간그의시대정신과진정한인간관계의활력있는균형이론으로재평가를받으며높이감탄을사고있다.
