이상은(李商隱,812∼858)의원적(原籍)은회주(懷州)의하내[河內,지금의허난성친양현(沁陽縣)]였으나조부때부터형양[滎陽,지금의허난성정저우(鄭州)]으로옮겨살았다.일생동안헌종(憲宗),목종(穆宗),경종(敬宗),문종(文宗),무종(武宗),선종(宣宗)의여섯황제를거쳤다.
9세때부친이사망해생활이매우곤궁했다.뼈저린가난은그가공부에전념하는동기가되었으며하루빨리성공해서가족을잘부양하고집안을일으켜야한다는생각을가지게되었다.이상은은학습속도가빨랐으며16세에이미<재론(才論)>,<성론(聖論)>을지어당시문사들에게인정을받았다고한다.
문종(文宗)대화(大和)3년(829,18세)당시,천평군절도사(天平軍節度使)인영호초는어린나이에비상한재주를지닌이상은을알아보고그를막료로불렀다.이때부터문종개성(開成)2년(837,26세)영호초가사망하기까지이상은은중간에1년남짓오촌당숙인최융(崔戎)을따라연해관찰사(?海觀察使)의막부에서막료생활을했던것을제외하면줄곧영호초의막부에서생활했다.영호초는이상은을자신의아들인영호도(令狐?)와함께수학할수있도록배려했고그에게변문(騈文)을쓰는방법을전수했다.이러한경력으로이상은은시에서정확한대구(對句),풍부한전고(典故),화려한언어를사용하게되었으며시뿐만아니라변문문장가로도이름을날리게되었다.
문종개성2년(837,26세)진사에합격하지만은인인영호초가사망하고나자연줄이없는그에게벼슬길은열리지않았다.얼마후그는절도사왕무원(王茂元)의요청으로경주(涇州,지금의간쑤성징현북쪽)로가서막부의막료가되었으며왕무원의눈에들어그의사위가되었다.이혼인은이후그의생애가우이당쟁의소용돌이에휘말리는시발점이된다.왕무원은이덕유(李德裕)와친분이있어정치적계보상이당(李黨)에속했다.당시당파적이해관계를따지는대부분의사람들에게스승이자후견인이었던영호초가죽은지얼마안되어반대당의사위가되는것은명백한배신행위로비쳤다.그러나막상이덕유가득세한시기에이상은은모친상으로벼슬을내려놓아야했고,3년상이끝나자이덕유는실각했고왕무원도사망해이상은은고립무원이되었다.결국중앙조정을포기하고막부를전전하다대중12년(858,47세)에사망한것으로추정된다.

이상은(李商隱,812∼858)은만당(晩唐)의시인으로자(字)는의산(義山),호는옥계생(玉溪生),혹은번남생(樊南生)이라한다.정교한대구(對句),풍부한용전(用典),기발한상상력,깊은슬픔으로이루어진그의시는생전에이미많은사람들의상찬을받을정도로뛰어났으나그의일생은고난과실의로점철되었다.중국문학사에서는그런그를재주를품었으나시대를잘못만난,우울한시인으로기억한다.
그러나그렇다고해서그의일생이슬픔뿐이었던것은아니었으니그이유는바로그에게‘시’가있었기때문이다.짧은인생이었다해도몇십년을사는동안어떻게단한번의기쁨도없었겠는가?그리고무엇보다그는인생의슬픔을‘시’라는언어예술을통해아름답게승화시켰던사람이다.남겨진그의시를해독하기란필자에게수많은주석서를짚고서도어둠속에서미로를찾아헤매는것처럼어려운작업이었으나비밀을엿보는순간?어쩌면이조차도착각일수있겠으나?눈앞이환하게밝아지는형언할수없는감동을맛보게되었다.그런데필자가나누어받은한줄기빛과같은이러한감동의첫번째수혜자는당연히시인자신이었을것이다.그렇기때문에필자는이상은의삶이슬픔만은아니었을것이라확신한다.
현존하는이상은의시는약600수로추정하고있다.본서에서는여러가지선집과연구서들을참조해총68수를뽑았으며이시들을생활(15수),역사(14수),사물(12수),사랑(15수),인생(12수)이라는이름으로구분해순서대로수록했다.
