한용운
승려이자시인,독립운동가.1879년8월29일충남홍성군에서몰락한양반가문의둘째아들로태어났다.속명은정옥,아명은유천이며,용운은법명이다.어릴때부터한문을수학했으며,14세때인1892년에결혼했다.이후동학농민운동에가담한데이어백담사등에서불교서적을탐독했다.1908년일본을주유하며신문물을시찰하고불교와서양철학을청강했으며,32세때인1910년백담사에서《조선불교유신론》을탈고했다.항일투사로도활동해,1918년청년계몽운동지《유심》을창간하고1919년3·1운동을주도했으며,조선물산장려운동을적극지원했다.47세때인1925년오세암에서시집《님의침묵》을탈고한뒤신간회발기,광주학생운동민중대회개최등항일운동에힘쓰는한편,월간《불교》를인수하고승려비밀결사인만당에영수로추대되었으며,1932년조선불교를대표하는인물로선정되었다.성금으로성북동에심우장을지을때총독부건물이마주보이는것이싫다며집을북향으로틀도록했고,영양실조에시달리는중에도일제의식량배급을거부했다.광복1년을앞둔1944년66세를일기로심우장에서입적했으며망우리공동묘지에안장되었다.1962년대한민국건국공로훈장대한민국장을수여했으며,서울시성북동심우장과설악산백담사에만해기념관이세워졌다.
