조벽암의시인적활동은대략세구간으로정리할수있을듯하다.그것은시집≪향수≫발간시기가그첫번째요,해방이후시집≪지열≫시기가그두번째구간에해당한다.그리고월북이후인시집≪벽암시선≫발간시기를마지막구간으로설정할수있다.시집≪향수≫의발간과그주변시기의특성은혼돈이라는한마디로압축할수있다.왜냐하면습작기시인들의기질적혼돈이빚어낸일정한수준을조벽암이끝끝내벗어나지못하고있기때문이다.그러한혼돈의끝에서7년이라는적지않은기간동안작품을전혀발표하지않는공백의시기를갖게되는데,이는시인자신의의지에따른절필이라기보다새로운일탈과발전이확인되지않는여건속에서스스로봉착한무력감의작용으로여겨진다.
조벽암의시인적생애에서가장돋보이는시기는시집≪지열≫이발간된해방이후약4년동안의기간이다.이시기에조벽암은그동안소통이차단된정신적운행의폭을모색하게되는데,그대안으로선택한것이사회주의사상에기초한작품인식과가치관이었다.우리는이를조벽암이다가간동경의세계라일컫는다.사회주의조국의건설이라는이상과동경에심취한조벽암은결국북행을결심하게되었고,남한에고향을둔실향민의한사람으로북한에서자신의삶을살아가게된다.
하지만북에서발표한≪벽암시선≫과기타자료를통해확인해본시인의궤적은해방이전의혼돈속으로또다시빠져든것으로보인다.조벽암이북에서심취했던사회주의취향은결국낙후하고지리멸렬한교조주의와그미화를위한도구적성격에불과했던것이기때문이다.식민지시대에하나의명쾌한정신적대안을마련하지못하고끝없이사춘기적혼돈을거듭했던조벽암은해방시기에눈부신일탈과변화를가질기회를가졌었다.그러나조벽암의기질과취향은그러한탈각의계기를스스로마련하지못하고새로운혼돈으로휩쓸려들어가고말았다.
