김달진은1929년11월≪문예공론(文藝公論)≫에첫작품을발표한이후1935년≪시원(詩苑)≫,1936년≪시인부락(詩人部落)≫,그리고1947년≪죽순(竹筍)≫의동인으로참가하면서활발한작품활동을했다.이기간동안그는자연을관조적시선으로바라보는빼어난서정시집≪청시(靑?)≫(1940)를출간했다.1960년대이후에는문단활동을거의하지않고은둔적생활로긴침묵의시간을보냈으나,1983년≪올빼미의노래≫를출간하면서시인으로서의명맥을이어갔다.김달진은60여년의시작활동기간동안노장적무위자연과불교적사유에기반을둔자신의시세계를지속적이고일관되게지켜온시인이다.뿐만아니라그는시창작과함께불경과동양고전의번역을통해얻은종교적사유를평생동안지속한학자이기도하다.
<청시(靑?)>는김달진의시세계를열고들어가는관문에해당한다.
시에서시인은가벼운바람이불고감나무의가지가흔들리는뜰한가운데서서,감잎사이로언뜻드러나는덜익은열매를바라본다.그작은뜰은대수롭지않은장소처럼보인다.하지만그곳은모든사물이존재하는세계의중심이다.그이유는“六月의꿈”이라는특별한시어때문이다.유월의꿈은훼손되지않은자연그대로의세계인데,시인은그것을아직익지않은열매에비유하고있다.익지않았다는점에서그것은완벽하지않지만,인위적인손길이닿지않았다는점에서그것은자연그대로의세계가된다.자연의원리는인위적인힘이없어도성숙해간다.오히려인위적인것이없어야온전한제모습을지닐수있다.시인은그익지않은열매가바람에흔들리는것을보면서언젠가가닿게될자신의삶에대해생각한다.더나아가우주에존재하는모든것들의의미에대해인식하게된다.익지않은열매의현상적모습으로존재의참모습을보여주는이시는김달진이생각한세계의진실과크게다르지않다.
김달진의시가지닌맑고순연한서정적세계는시인의우주적시선을통해서확연하게드러난다.그의시가보여주는꾸미지않는무위자연의세계와그가스스로지켜온은자적삶은이세계의본질에가닿고자하는시인의태도가빚어낸빛나는것들임이틀림없다.
