『 노자영 시선』은 1920년대 전반에 소설가이자 시인으로 왕성한 활동을 하였던 시인 노자연의 작품집이다. 《처녀의 화환》,《내 혼인 불탈 때》《백공작》에 수록된 작품을 저록으로 삼았다. 시인 노자연의 작품은 대부분 낭만적 감상주의로 불리는 애상과 비탄의 직정적 정서와 수사가 주조를 이루며 자연, 고향, 꿈, 사랑, 죽음과 관련된 소재를 많이 사용하였다.

그가본격적으로문단에이름을알리기시작한1920년대초는낭만주의문학에서영향을받은감상적이고애상적인시풍이지배적이었다.노자영역시일찍낭만주의이론을접하고이를직접번역,소개했을정도로낭만주의에크게매료되었다.하지만낭만주의가지닌부정의정신에주목하기보다‘내용적,감정적’이라는정서측면에서접근했다.사람들과어울리기보다대자연속에서홀로사색하는것을즐기는등낭만적인기질을타고난것도있었지만젊은시절애독한하이네,워즈워드의낭만적인시에서도영향을받았다.특히문학에생애를헌신했던톨스토이를동경했다.그의삶과문학에대해“영원히동경하는사람의길”이라평하기도했다.그의문학은특히‘청춘의열정’이라는모토를정서적으로구현함으로써문학청년들에게큰지지를얻었다.“시내에있는남녀학생중에옥편은한권없을망정노자영군의작품한권씩은거의다있다”고할정도였다.그러나당대문단은노자영문학을두고소녀취향의청춘연애담이나연시에불과하다고비판했다.물론그의문학이감상적이고관념적이라현실을객관적이고구체적으로수용하지못했다는점은부인할수없는사실이다.그러나1920년대대중의취향과기호를대변하는노자영문학의힘,그힘의실체에대해서는사려깊은이해가필요하다.대중이그의문학에열광한것은어쩌면문학에대한인간의가장오래되고익숙한기대에부응했기때문인지모른다.
