영어에는“돈이세상을돌아가게한다(Moneymakestheworldgoround)”라는유명한속담이있다.일자리부터일상적인쇼핑과생활비까지,또정부지출과세금및세계무역정책에관한큼직한뉴스까지,우리가무엇을하더라도돈은결코우리머릿속에서멀리있지않다.따라서돈의언어를이해해야,돈자체와돈이사용되는방식을이해하는데도도움이된다.이런전제는금융에관련해다양한어휘를지닌영어에서도다르지않다.

많은사람이영어에서돈과관련한용어는간결하고정확하며,엄일하고논리적이라생각할지도모르겠다.많은경우에그렇기는하다.본질적으로돈은숫자와관계가있고,사업과언론과학계처럼격식을갖춘환경에서주로논의된다.하지만영어를배울때흔히그렇듯이,액면그대로읽으면논리적으로이해되지않는특이한용어가많다.cashcow,filthyrich,cough-up같은용어를생각해보라.
한편bulls와bears가돈과관련된용어로쓰이는경우는17세기무역,즉역사가남긴기괴한유물이다.현금을뜻하는많은속어moolah,wonga,dough에서입증되듯이,지역방언의영향을받은단어들도있다.
이처럼별난경우도있지만,다른언어에서그렇듯이영어에서도돈과관련된용어는은유적으로쓰인다.예컨대돈이물처럼흐르는경우를표현할때는liquid라는용어를사용하고,돈이자산형태로동결된경우에는freeze라는표현이사용된다.자원은‘공동관리’pool될수있고,이례적인가격변동이일어난영역에는bubble이끼었다고말한다.많은언어에서그렇듯이,영어에서도돈이피에비유되고,생명력life-force,즉경제라는‘몸뚱이’body의건강과활력을유지하는데필요한것으로표현되는건일반적인현상이다.금융의움직임은전치사up/down을이용해표현하는뚜렷한경향이있고,이런경향
은세계어디에서나흔히볼수있지만,때로는forward/backward,outward/inward등과같은용어가사용되기도한다.
