노경식은 1938년 전북 남원에서 출생했으며 이곳에서 유년기와 청소년기를 보냈다. 그는 1962년 경희대학교 경제학과를 졸업한 후, ‘드라마센터 연극아카데미’ 극작 반을 수료했다. 1965년 서울신문 신춘문예에 희곡 「철새」가 등단되면서 극작가의 이름을 내걸었다. 그 후, 50여 년을 넘는 활발한 극작 활동을 통해 42편의 희곡을 남겼으며 대부분 작품들이 연극 무대에 올라 관객과 만났다. 그리고 그는 현재까지도 활발한 극작 활동을 이어가고 있으며 연극계 원로로서 든든한 버팀목 역할을 하고 있다.

노경식희곡과무대공간으로서의전라도

인간이살아가는공간은많은경험과다양한기억의저장소이다.인간의삶을다루는문학은이러한공간에의미와가치를부여함으로써장소의정체성을형성해나간다.특히,극문학에서무대공간은단순한공간적배경을표현하는것만은아니라극작가가구현하는주제를형성해나가는의미가가득한장소이다.게다가극적공간은극작가의희곡적작법에서출발해서배우의표정과몸짓,무대장치까지수많은의미를관객들에게전달하는역할을한다.따라서극작가들은무대공간에생명력을불어넣어막이내릴때까지관객들의시선을끝까지붙잡고있어야한다.
실제,극작가들은자신의나날살이의경험이있는지역성이묻어있는무대공간을선택하는경우가많다.왜냐하면극무대에지역성이부가되면극작품에리얼리티를확보할뿐만아니라줄거리체계를통한주제의식을강렬하게전달할수있기때문이다.그래서극작가는무대공간에지역성을부여하여자신만의극작의세계관을그려내곤하는데그대표적인작가가운데남원출신의노경식(1938∼)이있다.노경식은설화적인물을통하여민중들의애환적삶을지역적정서와함께그려내는정통적인리얼리즘극작세계를올곧게지키고있는극작가이다.

이처럼노경식은1960·1970년대전통극변동의큰흐름속에서정통리얼리즘극작세계를굳건히지켜나갔을뿐만아니라오랜극작활동기간동안민중들의애환적인삶의길목을조명한휴머니즘극작가이다.게다가그는전라도방언을통해민중들의밀접한생활상을들여다보기도하고전라도지역을무대공간으로삼아민중들의삶을애절하게표현했다.무엇보다노경식의극작품은전국의여러극단에의해연극무대로옮겨졌다는점도간과해서는안된다.그만큼그의희곡은공연예술로서그의미가크다하겠다.
그럼에도불구하고학계나연극계에서노경식의희곡에대한이렇다할논의와연구성과를내놓지못했다.그의희곡에대한논의는극내용뿐만아니라극적특성,연극적활용등다양한영역에서논의되어야할것이다.
