루퍼스의 한국 천문학 (양장본 Hardcover)

연세대학교국학연구원연세학풍연구소

역자손영종은연세대학교천문기상학과,같은대학원천문우주학과(이학박사)에서수학하였으며,현재연세대학교천문우주학과교수로재직중이다.한국천문학회및한국우주과학회이사,그리고국제천문연맹회원으로활동하고있다.『우주레시피』,『외부은하』,『우주의본질』등의저역서를출판하였으며,성단및은하에서의별형성과은하형성의관측적특성에대한다수의천문학연구논문이있다.

루퍼스는베커,밀러등과함께연희전문학교수물과를창설하여우리나라의초기근대자연과학교육체계를세우는데기여한선교사였다.루퍼스는1907년한국에와서숭실학당에서수학및과학교사로활약하면서한국의천문학사를연구하였다.그첫결과로1913년에조선태조의석각천문도인천상열차분야지도를분석한논문을발표하였고,1915년에이내용을정리하여,미국천문학전문지에게재하여한국천문학을처음으로세계에알렸다.
1912년이후에는서울에서기독교연합대학(ChosenChristianCollege,후에연희전문학교)설립에헌신하였고,1917년까지연희전문학교교수로봉직하였다.1917년귀국후에는미시간대학교천문학과교수와천문대장을맡았다.1935년에안식년을얻어1년간우리나라에다시와서연희전문에머무르면서한국천문학에대한책을출간하였다.
루퍼스는연희전문,연세대학교의천문학은물론이고한국천문학의정착에기여한대표적인선교사과학자였다.특히그는미시간대학에재직하던1922년에연희전문학교수물과1회졸업생이원철을대학원생으로받아들여박사학위논문을지도하였고,이원철은한국의최초이학박사가되어이후연세의천문학연구를이어갔다.(해설中)
