1.이제한국인과세계인이함께한국의역사와문화를읽는다
2021년한국에거주하는외국인인구는200여만명이다.한때길거리를지나가다마주치는외국인을경계의눈빛이나신기한눈빛으로쳐다보던시대를지나이제그들과함께부대끼고호흡하면서살아가는것이자연스러워졌다.
공적이거나개인적인관계의외국인벗들이늘어나고이들과의만남이잦아지면서한국의역사는더는‘국사’또는‘일국사’로서머물러있을수없게되었다.우물안개구리식의역사인식에서벗어나이제세계사의맥락에서한국의역사와문화를이야기해야한다.그러나아직도외국에는한국의역사와문화가제대로알려지지않아,언론에서는종종‘외국에잘못알려진(또는외국인이잘못소개하는)한국역사’의실상을고발하기도한다.이제외국인을비롯해외국에거주하는한국인들에게한국의역사를제대로소개하는책이필요한시기가도래한것이다.
이러한시대에전국역사교사모임은한국의역사와문화를외국인에게편견없이소개하기위해한국어와영어로《외국인을위한한국사(AKoreanHistoryforInternationalReaders)》를펴냈다.이책은‘한국인은세계인에게한국의역사를어떻게이야기할것인가?’라는부제에서도알수있듯이,외국인을위한책인동시에한국인을위한역사책이다.다양한역사적경험이한국인의생활과문화에미친영향은무엇인지,그리고그문화가한국역사에미친영향이무엇인지를외국인에게들려주기위해서는한국인이그내용을먼저제대로알아야하기때문이다.따라서이책은한국인에게는‘외국인에게한국의역사를어떻게들려주면좋을까?’라는물음에대한답을전하고,외국인에게는한국인이직접들려주는한국의역사와문화를접할수있게한다.
이책은한국인의역사인식이세계를향하고한국사가세계사속에당당히자리잡도록하되,자국사를홍보하고자하는일국사우월주의관점이나중국과일본과의사이에서일어나고있는역사분쟁에대한대응이라는일면적관점또한벗어나있다.따라서이책은좁은시야에서벗어나세계역사무대에서한국의역사가정당하게평가될수있도록한‘세계인이함께읽는한국의역사와문화’인것이다.
이책은2010년초판이출간된후한국을더깊이있게알고싶은외국인과재외국민들에게큰관심을받았으며,외국인대상한국어학당과외국의한국어학교의수업교재,외국파트너기업선물,외국소재한국공관의한국홍보자료등으로활용되었다.이번개정판에서는2000년이후달라진정보를수정·반영하고,최근까지의새로운현대사를추가하여빠르게변화하고있는오늘날의한국을만날수있다.

2.한국의역사,외국인에게어떻게들려주면좋을까?
바야흐로‘K-○○’의시대라할만큼한국의정서가깃든팝,영화,드라마,게임같은문화콘텐츠와음식등이세계적으로유행하고,촛불집회와코로나19방역등성숙한시민의식을세계에보여주며한국의위상이그어느때보다높아졌다.그만큼한국에관심을갖고한국의역사와문화에대해궁금해하는외국인도많아졌다.
이들에게한국과한국인을어떻게설명하면좋을까?《외국인을위한한국사》는한국의역사와문화를단편적으로소개하는안내서와달리오랜세월한반도에서살아온한국인의‘유장한역사’를들려줌으로써한국과한국인을깊이있게이해할수있다.
《외국인을위한한국사》는오랜역사에도불구하고외국인에게잘알려지지않은전근대시기역사와공동체외부에서는잘보이지않는한국인의생활과문화를폭넓게다룬다.특히한국민족의형성과정을추적하고,그들의삶과문화를이해하는데주안점을둔다.그렇다고해서이책이민족이외의주체를무시하거나민족을지고지순의가치에놓고있는건아니다.통일신라에서고려로이어지는과정에서민족이라이름붙일수있는인식이형성된이후같은국가의구성원으로서동등한귀속의식이형성되어가는과정을다루며,더불어사회경제,문화생활에서의중요한변화가일어나는과정과공동체의식이변화하는추이,그리고한국인의문화적정체성과밀접한관련이있는사건들을비중있게다룬다.또외국인들이가장궁금해하고놀라워하는,제3세계의여러나라와달리민주화와산업화를함께이룬한국의역동적인근현대사를정면으로소개하고있다.독자들은이책을통해한국전쟁과분단으로굴곡진현대사에서도희망의역사를만들어온한국인을만날수있다.

외국인과한국인모두쉽게이해할수있게서술했으며,역사적사건과사실을나열하기보다그맥락을이해할수있도록설명하고,시기마다역사를이끌어온인물을상세히소개한다.55개의지도,27개의그래픽자료,520여컷의시각자료를다양하고풍부하게실어전체역사흐름을일목요연하게살필수있다.
