1940년서울출생.서울대외교학과를졸업하고도미하여미국뉴햄프셔대에서정치학석사,캘리포니아주립대(버클리)에서정치학박사학위를받았다.이후미국대학에서약8년,귀국이후30년가까이고려대에서연구하고학생들을가르쳤다.김영삼대통령시절에는외무부장관으로정책을만들고현장을지휘했다.노무현대통령시절에는주미대사로격동의외교무대에서직접선수로뛰기도했다.대학에서은퇴한후에도외교에종사하고있으니반세기경력의‘교수외교관’이라고할수있을것이다.공직에몸담고있지않은시절에도늘민간외교무대의현장에있었다.교수시절다양한국제교류를통해쌓아둔인맥은훗날장관으로서공식외교무대에서활동할때큰도움이되었다.민간인시절에는키프로스유엔사무총장특별대표,서울국제포럼회장,동아시아비전그룹(EAVG)의장,삼각위원회아시아태평양지역부의장을역임했으며,최근(2017년)까지한독통일정책자문위원회공동위원장,한미협회회장으로활동했다.HanSungJooHanSungJooisaProfessorEmeritusatKoreaUniversity.HepreviouslyservedastheMinisterofForeignAffairs,UNSecretary-General’sSpecialRepresentativeforCyprus,amemberoftheUNInquiryCommissiononthe1994RwandaGenocide,ChairmanoftheEastAsiaVisionGroup,AmbassadoroftheRepublicofKoreatotheUnitedStates,andActingPresidentofKoreaUniversity.HeisagraduateofSeoulNationalUniversityandreceivedaPh.D.inPoliticalSciencefromtheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley.Previously,hetaughtatCityUniversityofNewYorkandwasavisitingProfessoratColumbiaUniversityandStanfordUniversity.HewasalsoaDistinguishedFellowattheRockefellerBrothersFund.HefrequentlyplayedaconsultingrolefortheKoreangovernment,includingseveralpresidents,theministryofforeignaffairs,ministryofnationaldefense,andministryofnationalunification.HeisalsoachairprofessorattheNationalDiplomaticAcademyofKorea.HisEnglishpublicationsincludeTheFailureofDemocracyinSouthKorea,KoreanDiplomacyinanEraofGlobalization,KoreainaChangingWorld,andChangingValuesinAsia.HehasmanypublicationsinKorean,includingNamGwaPuk,kurigoSekye(TheTwoKoreasandtheWorld),andmostrecentlyamemoirinKorean,OegyouiGil(MyDiplomaticJourney).
