#1-시인은첩첩산중,그마을에서태어나고자랍니다.산골소년이자라서,대학교의명망높은영문학자가되고,서예에입문하여추사체(秋史體)를비롯하여여러서체를연마한초대작가이며,고희를넘겨시인으로등단하였으니,그의일생은가히입지전적(立志傳的)삶이라하겠습니다.그러함에도불구하고그는시종여일(始終如一)겸손한자세를견지하고있으니,그의인품은실로아름다운바가있습니다.그가창작한시에서도아름다운추억이오롯하게공감각적이미지로형상화되어있습니다.

#2-변무섭시인의작품에서중심을이루는경향은고향에대한그리움,어머니와아버지에대한사랑,그리고이에서파생된정서등으로보입니다.특히어머니에대한제재가눈물겨운정도로두드러집니다.시인에게쏟아부은어머니의희생적사랑에대한추억때문인것같습니다.

#3-변무섭시인의작품에설의법(設疑法)이자주원용됩니다.설의법은쉽게판단할수있는사실과논리를의문문형식으로제시하여독자가스스로답을찾거나논리를유추하게하는수사법(修辭法)이어서,시인은물론여러분야의사람이다용(多用)합니다.따라서변무섭시인만의표현적특징일수는없을터이나,그빈도가높고,특정작품은각연을설의법만으로구성하고있어개성적특징으로볼수도있습니다.

#4-변무섭시인의조상대은변안열(大隱邊安烈)은고려말의충신으로문무를겸하셨습니다.공의직은영삼사사(領三司事)에이른문인이었을뿐만아니라,이성계장군과더불어남원황산대첩에서왜적을섬멸하였으며,북방을수없이침범한오랑캐를물리친명장입니다.또한그는목은(牧隱),야은(冶隱),포은(圃隱)삼은(三隱)과함께추앙받는‘대은(大隱)’이십니다.그분의후손이정착하여,대를이어내려온고향산천은시인에게역설적호감을유지하게합니다.
