ThisbookbeginsbypresentingthephoneticpropertiesandclassificatoryprinciplesofEnglishconsonantsandvowelsfromtheperspectiveofarticulatoryphonetics.Thesubsequentstagediscusses,withinaphonologicalframework,thevarioussoundchangesthatEnglishconsonantsandvowelsundergo,formulatedhereasasetofsystematicpronunciationrules.ThefinalstageoffersanacousticanalysisofEnglishconsonantsandvowelsfromthestandpointofacousticphonetics.Thesectionsonarticulatoryphoneticsandphonologyareprimarilyadaptedandtranslatedfrommyearlierwork,EnglishPronunciationRulesandTranscription(2014),whilethesectiononacousticphoneticsdrawsonmymorerecentwork,LectureNotesonEnglishConsonantsandVowels(2023).
Asinallhumanlanguages,Englishsentencesarecomposedofindividualwords,eachofwhichisbuiltfromsegmentalunits-consonantsandvowels.Thesesegments,however,varyconsiderablyintheirrealizedformsdependingonthephoneticenvironmentinwhichtheyoccur.Tohelpthereader’sunderstanding,letmeprovideafewexamples.Theconsonant/l/surfacesastheso-called‘darkl,’[ɫ],insyllable-finalorword-finalposition.Theconsonant/t/becomes[ɾ]whenitappearsbetweenavowelandanunstressedvowel.Thesequence/ər/-aschwafollowedby/r/-coalescesintoa‘rhoticschwa,’[ɚ].Thebriefoverviewbelowisintendedtohelpreadersanticipatetheoverallstructureandfocusofthisbook.
Fromtheperspectiveofarticulatoryphonetics,/l/isclassifiedasavoicedalveolarlateralliquid,/r/asavoicedalveolarcentralliquid,and/t/asavoicelessalveolarstop.Thevowel/ə/iscategorizedasanunstressedmidcentralunroundedlaxvowel.Fromaphonologicalstandpoint,/l/undergoesthevelarizationrule,whichyields[ɫ],and/t/undergoestheflappingrule,producing[ɾ].Thesequence/ər/issubjecttotheschwa-mergerrule,resultingin[ɚ].Intermsofacousticphonetics,[ɫ]typicallyshowsanF2frequencyaround1,000Hz,[ɾ]exhibitsaclosuredurationofroughly30msorless,and[ɚ]ischaracterizedbyanF3frequencygenerallybelow2,000Hz.
