서양의 학문이 우리나라에 전해진 이후 모든 학문의 기본 도구인 논리학이 우리에게는 없다는 것이 정설이었다. 중국의 한 철학자는 현미경이 없던 중국에 현미경이 전래되어 작은 세균을 관찰할 수 있었던 것처럼 서양의 논리학을 도입하여 중국철학을 합리적으로 재해석해야 한다고 주장하기도 하였다. 많은 동양철학자가 서양의 논리학이나 학설을 도입하여 동양철학을 해석하고 이해하려고 많은 노력을 기울였다. 그러나 그 결과는 그다지 성공적이지 못하였다. 동양철학은 개념이 명확하지 못하고 논리적 모순이 많다는 점이 드러날 뿐이었다. 이러한 관점은 철학에서 그치지 않고 동양학 전체에 영향을 미쳤다. 이에 동양적 관점이나 주장은 대개 뒤로 밀리고 서양의 것들로 채워졌다.
윤용남 교수는 청야의 주자철학 연구 (도서출판 학고방)에서 동양의 논리학은 체용론( )과 현미론( )에 근거를 둔 체용논리학이며, 이는 공자 때부터 동양 사람들이 학문이나 일상생활 속에서 널리 사용해왔다는 것을 밝혔다. 개념 정의나 서술 방식이 서양과 다르다는 점을 분명히 하면서 주자 성리학에 실제로 적용하여 주자철학을 완전히 체계화하였다. 동양에서는 체용논리학을 적용하여 주장을 전개한다는 것을 이해하면 동양의 주장을 바르게 이해할 수 있으므로 서양과 소통할 수 있다. 서로 다른 점을 알면 그에 맞춰가며 대화할 수 있는 것이다. 아울러 동양식의 연구도 활성화 할 수 있다. 그동안 서양식의 연구방법에 의하여 인문 사회과학은 물론 자연과학 등 모든 분야가 서양식으로만 이루어졌지만 이제 동양식으로도 할 수 있으므로 더 다양한 연구가 이루어질 수 있다.
당장 오늘날 인공지능의 기계학습에 사용하는 논리는 형식논리학이 아니라 체용논리학이다. 예를 들어 자율주행 자동차는 ‘이성적 동물’을 찾는 것이 아니라 사람의 형상( )을 찾는다. 이를 출발점으로 하여 학문의 한류도 일어날 수 있다고 한다. 동양에서 반만년 이어온 비법을 다시 사용하면 훨씬 더 인류에 크게 도움이 될 것이라고 한다.
