[우리문화의뿌리를찾아서TheSpiritofKoreanCulturalRoots]시리즈30번째책인『한국의문자:한글』의영어판으로,한글의창제배경과제자원리,발전과정등한글에대해총체적으로설명한책이다.한글은창제자와만든시기및원리를구체적으로알수있는전세계유일한문자로,그어느글자의영향도받지않고독창적으로창조되었다.이책에서는세종대왕이한글을만들게된계기는무엇이었는지,1444년한글이완성되기까지어떠한진행과정을거쳤는지자세하게서술하고,한글이사람의조음기관을관찰한후그모양을본떠과학적인원리에의해창제된문자임을설명한다.
이러한한글의우수성을인정하여유네스코에서는1989년‘세종대왕문맹퇴치상(UnescoKingSejongLiteracyPrize)’을제정해문맹퇴치에공헌한개인이나단체에게상을수여하고있으며,1997년에는한글을해설한책인『훈민정음』을‘세계기록유산(UnescoMemoryoftheWorldRegister)’으로지정했다.이책을통해한글이과학적이고체계적으로만들어진우수한문자임을다시한번확인할수있을것이다.

총5장으로구성되어있는이책의1장에서는한글의특징을설명하고한글이다른문자를참고해만든것인아닌독창적으로창제된문자임을밝히고있다.2장에서는세종대왕이당시사용되던한자가우리말을표현하기에적절하지않고특히일반백성들이익히기에어렵다는점을안타깝게여겨한글을창제하게되었음을설명한다.또한한글창제취지및제자원리등이수록된해설서인『훈민정음』의구성과내용에대해자세하게소개한다.3장에서는한글이배우고사용하기쉬워일반백성들의일상으로빠르게보급·확산되었음을언급하고있으며,4장에서는서학을비롯해서구문물과제도를받아들이게되는조선조말의시대적상황이국문을위주로한문자생활로의혁신을가져오게되었음을설명하고,일제강점기민족말살정책으로인해위기에처한한글의상황에대해서술한다.마지막으로5장에서는해방후비약적인발전을거듭하여오늘날경제대국으로성장하게된한국의국가위상의변화및한류의확산등으로한글의세계화가이루어지고있는21세기현실을점검했다.
