간행사

고대그리스가나라가커서,인구가많아서세계문명을주도한것이아니다.세계최초의체계적인소리글자인희랍문자를딛고찬란한문화를창조했기때문이다.
중세천년로마가대제국을이루고세계를제패한것도로마자가있었기때문이고,근세에와서북해의작은섬나라잉글랜드가대영제국을이루며세계문명을주도한것도우수한소리글자인로마자를받아들여쌓아올린문화의힘이있었기때문이다.그런데21세기지금세계방방곡곡에는놀랍게도한류문화가뜨겁게흘러넘치고있다.이것은결코기이한현상도,일시적인현상도아니다.
우리에게는세상어떤문자와도비교할수없는우수한문자한글이있기때문이다.누구나쉽게배워읽고써서시인이될수있고작가가될수있고철학자가될수있다.세상에서숨쉬듯이,말하듯이누구나읽고써서시인이되고작가가되고철학자가될수있는나라는한국밖에없다.그러니어찌그문화가세계로흘러넘치지않겠는가.
지금세계에는1,000여대학에한국학과가개설되어있고세종학당을비롯하여4,000여공식,비공식기관에서한글과한국어를가르치고배우고있다.어찌꿈같은이야기가아닌가.
지난해시행된외국인한국어능력시험에응시한사람의수가61개나라,16만7천여명에달한것만보아도그열기가얼마나뜨거운지짐작하고도남음이있다.이제바야흐로한글문화,한류문화는거스를수없는시대의대세가된것이다.
그런데안타깝게도우리는지금까지세계인들의이뜨거운열기를받아줄준비가되어있지못했다.한류문화를알고싶어하고한글과한국어를배우고싶어하는외국인들에게체계적으로길을안내하는믿을만한지침서를개발하지못했던것이다.
이에한글의세계화를열망하는우리한글학회는KBS미디어와함께심혈을기울여한글·한국어·한국문화를책임있게가르치고배울수있는교재를개발하게된것이다.
그러나내국인을대상으로한국어교육이아닌외국인을대상으로하는한국어교육과그교재의개발은그시각이전혀다르기때문에여간어려운문제가아니었다.
그런데우리학회에는일찍부터이문제에눈떠평생을한국어교육의연구와교육에몸바쳐온백봉자교수가있으니어찌다행이라하지않겠는가.일찍이연세대학교한국어학당교수로재직하면서오랫동안외국인을대상으로한한국어교육경험을쌓아왔으니이론은물론,실천경험에서도누구보다미더운저자가될수있다고생각하기때문이다.백교수가팀을이끌며십여명의교수들이오랫동안함께지혜를모아쓴『KBS생활한국어』에거는기대가큰것은이런까닭이있기때문이다.
이책의발간이우리나라에서세계로,세계에서우리나라로찾아오는고속도로의구실을해줄것을기대하면서간행사를대신한다.21세기는한류문화,한글문화의시대임을확신하면서.

EmpiretoruletheworldduringtheMiddleAges,andthegreatBritishEmpirewasabletotake
leadershipintheworld’scivilizationseventhoughEnglandwasasmallislandnationintheNorth
Seabecausetheyhadthepowerofculturebuiltuponthelanguagethatwasbasedonthephonetic
Romanalphabet.Today,inthe21stcentury,theHallyuWave,ortheKoreanWave,issweeping
theworldtoourgreatsurprise.Butthisisnotatemporaryorunexplainedphenomenonatall.
ThespreadoftheKoreanWavehasbeenpossiblebecausewehaveanoutstandinglanguage
system,Hangul,ofwhichnosimilarorcomparableexamplescanbefoundanywhereinthe
world.HangulisaKoreanalphabetanybodycaneasilylearnhowtoreadandwritetobecome
poets,writers,orphilosophers.Koreaistheonlycountrywithawritingsystemthatanybodycan
readandwriteaseasilyasspeakingandbreathingtobecomepoets,writers,andphilosophers.
Giventhat,thereisnothingunusualaboutitsculturespreadinglikewildwavesthroughoutthe
world.
Asoftoday,over1,000collegesareofferingKoreanlanguagecoursesintheworld,and+here
areanadditional4,000andmoreofficialandnon-officialinstitutionsincludingtheKingSejong
InstitutethatteachesKoreanandHangul.Thisisarealitythatislikeadream.
Lastyear,over167,000peoplefrom61countriesaroundtheworldappliedandtooktheTest
ofProficiencyinKorean,testifyingtotheboominlearningtheKoreanlanguage.TheHangul
andtheHallyuculturesarethegrandcurrentsoftimesthatnobodycangoagainstanymore.
Buttoourgreatregret,wearenotpreparedtoaccommodatethefeverishdemandsfrompeople
aroundtheworldyet.TherearenumerousforeignerswhowishtoknowmoreabouttheHallyu
cultureandlearnHangulandtheKoreanlanguagebuttherehasn’tbeenanyreliablereference
booktoguidethemtowardstherightdirection.
DreamingoftheglobalizationofHangul,theKoreanLanguageSocietyjoinedhandswith
Korea’sleadingpublicbroadcastingcompanyKBStodevelopareliableKoreanlanguagebook
thatpeoplecanteachorlearntheKoreanlanguageandKoreanculture.
ButdevelopingaKoreanlanguagetextbookandKoreanlanguagecurriculum,notforthenative
