그분의 46번 교향곡 (한국 악사와 미국 의사)

저자는 스물 다섯 살에 단돈 $270을 가지고 미국에서 이민생활을 시작해 서른 아홉 살에 의과 대학에 입학했고, 레지던트 과정을 마흔 여섯에 마쳤다.(46 번 교향곡의 의미는 46세의 나이에 의사가 된 것을 뜻함.) 지금은 미국 워싱턴 주 시애틀의 린우드라는 곳에 ‘김권종 종합 의료원’을 개원하여 환자들을 진료하고 있다. 맨주먹으로 미국에 이민 와서 삼십 년 이상 살아온 삶을 통해 배운 것을 이민 생활하는 분들께 전하고자 하는 마음에 이 책을 쓰기로 작정했다. 한국에서의 빈한한 삶을 살았던 시절, 남을 즐겁게 해 주던 음악 연주자, 미국에서의 바닥 생활, 그리고 의사가 되기까지의 길을 통해 이민 시대를 살고 있는 분에게 ‘지금도 가능하다’라는 용기가 됐으면 한다. 저자는 이 책을 쓰면서 여러 번 눈물을 흘렸다. 하나는 지난 일의 슬픔이며, 다른 하나는 감사의 눈물이다. 누구든 슬픔의 눈물을 감사의 조건으로 바꿀 수 있는 용기가 있다면, 분명 이국 생활에서 뜻을 이룰 수 있다고 확신한다. 미국에 이민 온 지 삼십 년이 넘었고, 한글은 말로 하는 것 이외에 글로는 잘 안 쓰다 보니 철자법이 어색한 부분이 많을 것이다. 이 책이 나오기까지 도움을 주신 분들에게 고마움을 전한다. 그리고 어린 자식들을 붙들고 악착같이 살아온 어머니와, 지지리 가난한 속에서도 열심히 살아준 형제들, 미국 생활의 고생을 함께 한 아내와 가족, 그리고 누구보다 오늘의 나를 있게 해 준 하나님께 감사드린다.

I left Korea at the age of 25 with only $270 and entered into medical school at the age of 39. I completed residency training at the age of 46 (the 46th Symphony indicates the age that I became a medical doctor after residency) and currently practice medicine and treat patients in Lynnwood, Washington.

I decided to write this book to share the story of my humble life and what I've learned from over 30 years of living in the States as an immigrant. Many suggestions from my acquaintances also helped give me the courage to start this book.

Even though I was born and raised in a poor family in Korea, played music for the entertainment of others, and lived with low social status, I was still able to become a medical doctor in the States, as an immigrant and with my difficult life. I hope that my life can be encouragement to other immigrants that it is never too late to accomplish anything.

I had many tears in my eyes while writing this book: for the sorrowful moments in my life, but also for the gratefulness I have that God still guided me to this point. I believe that if you have the courage to change your despair into thankfulness for your circumstances, even as an immigrant, your dreams can come true.

Having lived in the States for over 30 years, I found it uncomfortable to write in Korean with grammatically correct sentence structures and I'd like to thank everyone who helped me on this publication. I would also like to express appreciation for my mother who dealt with harsh living conditions to support her family, for my brothers and sister who also lived in poverty, and my family -- my wife and two daughters -- who have been through the storms in my life with me. Most importantly, I thank God for having made me who I am by His grace and love.
