내 안에서 언제 태어났는지도 모를 그리움에 대하여
허수경 시인의 산문집 『그대는 할말을 어디에 두고 왔는가』. 2003년에 펴낸 《길모퉁이의 중국식당》의 개정판으로, 제목을 바꾸고 글의 구성과 책 표지 등을 변경해 15년 만에 새로운 모습으로 다시 독자들과 만난다. 우리 자연과 우리 음식과 우리 사람과 우리 시를 그토록 뼈저리게 사랑했던 저자가 이 땅을 떠나 막막한 독일 땅에 혼자 던져지게 되면서 자기 안에 고이게 된 이야기를 특유의 시와 같은 사유로 풀어놓은 총 139개의 짧은 산문과 9통의 긴 편지로 이루어져 있다.

더 이상 이 지상에 없던 마당을 가꾸고, 사는 힘도 힘이지만 죽음으로 가는 힘도 힘이라고 이야기하고, 지상의 삶과 지하의 삶이 그렇게 맞닿아 있다고 말하며 한국을 떠나는 순간부터 죽음을 손에 쥐고 있던 저자는 첫 장부터 마지막 장까지 사람을 휘게 하고, 구부리고 구부려서 끝끝내 부러지게 하지 않고, 모두 원으로 둥글려놓으며 우리에게 일찌감치 죽음을 공부시키고 훈련시킨다.
지난 2월 말기암을 앓고 있다는 소식을 전하며 얼마 남지 않은 시간 동안 세상에 내보였던 글 가운데 다시 손길이 닿았으면 하는 책들을 모아 다시금 정리하고 싶다는 마음을 보내온 저자는 독일의 뮌스터에서 홀로 생을 정리하고, 그리움의 시간들을 정리해 이 책을 다시 독자들에게 선보인다.

경남진주에서태어났다.그곳에서자라고대학역시그곳에서다녔다.오래된도시,그진주가도시에대한원체험이었다.낮은한옥들,골목들,그사이사이에있던오래된식당들과주점들.그인간의도시에서새어나오던불빛들이내정서의근간이었다.대학을졸업하고밥을벌기위해서울로올라왔고그무렵에시인이되었다.처음에는봉천동에서살다가방송국스크립터생활을하면서이태원,원당,광화문근처에서셋방을얻어살기도했다.

1992년늦가을독일로왔다.나에게는집이라는개념이없었다.셋방아니면기숙사방이내삶의거처였다.작은방하나만을지상에얻어놓고유랑을하는것처럼독일에서살면서공부했고,여름방학이면그방마저독일에두고오리엔트로발굴을하러가기도했다.발굴장의숙소는텐트이거나여러명이함께지내는임시로지어진방이었다.발굴을하면서,폐허가된옛도시를경험하면서,인간의도시들은영원하지않다는것을뼈저리게알았다.도시뿐아니라우리모두이지상에서영원히거처하지못할거라는것도사무치게알았다.

서울에서살때두권의시집『슬픔만한거름이어디있으랴』『혼자가는먼집』을발표했다.두번째시집인『혼자가는먼집』의제목을정할때그것이어쩌면나라는자아의미래가될것이라는예감이들었다.독일에서살면서세번째시집『내영혼은오래되었으나』를내었을때이미나는참많은폐허도시를보고난뒤였다.나는사라지는모든것들이그냥사라지지않는다는것을짐작했다.물질이든생명이든유한한주기를살다가사라져갈때그들의영혼은어디인가에남아있다는생각을했다.

뮌스터대학에서고고학을공부하고박사학위를받으면서학교라는제도속에서공부하기를멈추고글쓰기로돌아왔다.그뒤로시집『청동의시간감자의시간』『빌어먹을,차가운심장』『누구도기억하지않는역에서』,산문집『모래도시를찾아서』『너없이걸었다』,장편소설『박하』『아틀란티스야,잘가』『모래도시』,동화책『가로미와늘메이야기』『마루호리의비밀』,번역서『슬픈란돌린』『끝없는이야기』『사랑하기위한일곱번의시도』『그림형제동화집』등을펴냈다.

동서문학상,전숙희문학상,이육사문학상을수상했다.

2018년현재뮌스터에서살고있다.

2018년8월허수경시인의산문집『그대는할말을어디에두고왔는가』를펴냅니다.이책은2003년2월에나온『길모퉁이의중국식당』의개정판이기도합니다.제목을바꾸고글의넣음새와책의만듦새를달리하여15년만에다시출간하게된것은시인의요청에의해서였습니다.그러니까지난2월시인이알려온자신의아픈안부와더불어단단한당부가제게남았던것입니다.말기암을앓고있다고했습니다.얼마남지않은시간동안세상에뿌려놓은제글빚가운데제손길이다시닿았으면하는책들을다시그러모아빛을쏘여달라는짧은편지였습니다.일체의망설임도보이지못하고재차물음도건넬수가없었습니다.시인이머물고있는그곳,독일의뮌스터에서홀로제생을정리하고싶다며아주단호하게그어떤만남도허락하지않았기때문입니다.하는수없이아주간간어렵사리시인과통화를하며책을만들어나갔습니다.그나마다행인것은이책을쓴시인이나이책을읽은저나이책이나온직후부터너무이책을사랑해왔기때문에그간자주대화를나눠왔다는기억에기댈수있었던안도였습니다.처음책이출간되었을때는김혜순과김사인,두시인이멀리독일에서어렵사리공부하는후배시인을위해부모된마음을얹어주셨지요.이번책에는신용목과박준,두시인이멀리독일에서극한으로앓고있는선배시인을위해자식된마음을바쳐주었고요.워낙에시인좋아하는시인이라이네명의시인이평생제책안에머물게됨을보고참든든해했습니다.

이책은시인이쓴총139개의짧은산문과9통의긴편지로이루어져있습니다.우리자연과우리음식과우리사람과우리시를그토록뼈저리게사랑했던시인이이땅을떠나우리자연이아닌우리음식이아닌우리사람이아닌우리시가아닌막막한독일땅에혼자던져지게되면서제안에고이게된이야기들을특유의시와같은사유로풀어놓고있습니다.얼마나배고플까얼마나외로울까얼마나서러울까하는모든상황을건너서서섬찟섬찟놀라게되는문장들을마주할때가대부분인데,그때마다내가주춤하게된건첫장부터마지막장까지시인이쥐고있는손수건이'죽음'이었구나하는걸확인할수있어서였습니다.그러면서알았지요.아,한국을떠나는순간시인은죽었구나.그죽음을경험한사람이니까거죽은그대로둔채삶과죽음을겁도없이오갈수있었던거겠구나.이시인의시가언제듯통곡의가락일수있는연유는예있었겠구나.

“더이상이지상에없던마당을가꾸던사람”,“나는더혼자이다”라고말하는사람,“사는힘도힘이지만죽음으로가는힘도힘”이라말하는사람,“지상의삶과지하의삶이그렇게맞닿아있다고”고말하는사람,“되돌아보면아무일도내인생에일어나지않은것”같다고말하는사람,“꼭다시만나자,네가돌아오는그날까지……”라고말하는사람,시인허수경.

사람허리창자를끊을만큼무시무시한말들인데듣다보니묘하게단련이되는것이,그리하여납득이되는것이,우리에게‘죽음’을일찌감치공부시키고훈련시켜서긍정적이고능동적이게받아들이게도한다는점에있었습니다.사람을휘게하는구나,구부리고구부려서끝끝내부러지게하지않는구나,모두를원으로둥글려놓는구나,원이원일때합하기도좋게끔그리우리를유연하게하는구나.

허수경시인에게쓴박준시인의편지에서이부분에굵게밑줄을그었습니다.“그래도시만한선물은없었습니다.다행스러운것은이선배의선물을저만받은것이아니라세상의사람들이함께받았다는사실입니다.오늘은같은것으로보답을드리고도싶습니다.선배의것을선배에게로.”

“고마웠다,그생의어떤시간”이라지만나는이시간의다른이름이‘영원’임을압니다.
