1969년경상북도영주시에서태어나학업을시작한이래로2009년2월에선문대학교에서Ph.D.를받았다.현재천년왕국운동,예언자운동,메시아운동,유토피아운동에대한공부를계속하고있고,한국메시아운동사연구소장으로활동하고있다

근현대한국종교사에있어서가장큰특징중의하나는수많은신종교가출현한것이다.민족적자생종교로는동학(천도교)ㆍ대종교ㆍ증산교ㆍ보천교ㆍ원불교ㆍ금강대도등이대표적이며,기독교계의경우전도관ㆍ통일교ㆍ용문산기도원ㆍ여호와새일교단등이대표적이다.이러한신종교들은조선왕조의해체와제국주의의침략그리고자본주의의도입과정에서고통과혼란을겪는민중들에게새로운삶의의미와희망을불어넣으며새로운종교로정착하였다.
한국종교학계에서신종교에대한담론이본격적으로논의되기시작한것은1990년대이후라할수있는데,신종교연구자가되기위해서는종교학에대한깊은이해와더불어실제신종교에대한체험이동시에필요하다.이책의저자인김종석박사는선문대학교에서박태선장로의전도관에대한연구를통하여석사와박사학위를받았으며,통일교축복가정의일원이될정도로독실한통일교신자이다.이미한국메시아운동사연구에대한저서10권을출간한것에서알수있듯이,저자는통일교를중심으로하여한국메시아운동에대해연구하고있는전문적인신종교연구자이다.
