중세로 접어들면서 동아시아와 서양의 각국은 고급 인재를 양성하기 위한 고등교육 기관을 설립하였다. 동아시아 서원과 서양의 중세 대학은 이 무렵 설립된 대표적인 고등교육기관이라 할 수 있다.
이 책은 동양과 서양의 대표적 교육기관인 서원과 대학의 출현과 전개, 운영체제, 지식 보급 기지로서의 역할, 교육 목표, 대학과 서원을 중심으로 전개된 동・서양의 사상적 조류 등을 종합적으로 비교 연구함으로써, 새로운 학술사적 가치를 확인하는 동시에 한국 서원의 세계적 보편성과 특수성을 제고하였다

책의 구성
이 책은 크게 2부로 구성하였다. 제 1부 ‘동아시아 서원과 서양 중세 대학 비교’는 모두 9장으로 구성되어 있으며, 서원과 대학의 출현 배경을 비롯해 장서・운영 규정・ 경제적 기반・구성원 등 양기관의 지향점과 운영 양상을 비교・검토하였다. 제2부는 ‘전환기 중국 서원의 변모상’이다. 모두 5장으로 구성하였는데, 중세 이후 새로운 사 유 체계의 등장과 정치의 변화, 서양 문물의 유입, 현대 교육의 실시라는 시대적 전 환기에 대응하는 중국 서원의 제 양상을 규명하였다.
