이 책은 2020년 네덜란드 브릴(Brill) 출판사에서 출간된 영문 학술서 Confucian Academies in East Asia를 완역한 것으로, 독일 베를린 자유대학교 한국학연구소와 서원 관련 연구자들의 한국・중국・일본・베트남 등 동아시아 각국의 서원을 비교 연구한 성과를 담고 있다.
동아시아 서원의 다원성과 역동성은 서원을 단일한 교육 제도가 아닌, 시대와 지역에 따라 끊임없이 변화해 온 ‘역동적 지식 공간’으로 바라본다. 중국 송대 서원에서 조선, 일본, 베트남, 대만, 북한에 이르기까지 서원의 교육・의례・사회적 역할과 문화유산으로서의 변용을 폭넓게 다루며, 기존의 중국 중심 전파론을 넘어서는 새로운 해석을 제시한다. 각 지역의 서원이 단순한 모방이나 변형이 아닌, 고유한 사회적・문화적 맥락에서 이루어진 창조적 재구성임을 실증적으로
