저자

윤열수

동국대학교 대학원 미술사학과에서 『조선후기 산신탱화(山神幀畵) 연구』로 석사 학위를, 『문자도(文字圖)를 통해 본 민화(民畵)의 지역적 특성과 작가 연구』로 박사 학위를 받았다. 동 대학교 미술사학과를 비롯하여 여러 대학에서 강의 활동을 했다. 이후로도 계속해서 민화를 보다 널리 알리며 에밀레박물관과 삼성출판박물관 학예실장, 가천박물관 부관장, 서울특별시 박물관협의회 회장 등으로 활발한 활동을 했다. 2007년부터 2011년까지 문화재청 문화재위원, 2008년부터 2011년까지 한국민화학회 회장 등으로 활동했다. 2014년에는 한국 민화 해외 전시 관련 공로가 인정돼 대통령 표창을 받았다. 2002년에는 수집한 민화를 일반인에게 공개하기 위해 가회민화박물관을 개관했다. 이곳은 민화 2700여 점을 비롯해 전적류, 무신도 등 총 3500여 점의 자료가 소장·전시되어 있으며, 일반인을 위한 민화아카데미 등 교육 프로그램도 진행하고 있다. 그동안 민화, 벽화 등과 관련된 다수의 논문을 발표했으며, 지은 책으로는 『한국호랑이』(열화당, 1986), 『장승과 벅수』(대원사, 1991), 『산신도』(대원사, 1998), 『용, 불멸의 신화』(대원사, 1999), 『신화 속 상상동물 열전』(한국문화재보호재단, 2010), 『알고 보면 반할 민화』(태학사, 2022) 등이 있다.
