중앙대졸업후,김중업건축연구소에서건축을시작하였으며,미국UCLA건축대학원에서건축학/디자인석사학위(MasterofArchitecture,2ndProfessionalDegree)를취득하였다.
1990년배병길건축연구소를개설하고요코하마빌딩,국제화랑,갤러리현대,은둔의집,수도원묵당,학의재,김천중/고등학교송설역사관과예지관,김천시립문화박물관,통의동TSC계획을하였고,최근2025년07월서울서초구반포동“미도1차재건축설계공모전”에주)희림과공동참가당선되었으며,09월대구광역시신청사국제공모전에주)시아플랜외3곳과공동참가3위입상거부하였다.여러건축작품을통하여대한민국환경문화상,서울시건축상,한국건축문화대상,한국건축가협회건축작품상,아천특별건축상,문화체육부장관표창,FIKA공로상외다수건축상을수상하였으며,2019년대한민국정부로부터국가문화발전유공자로옥관문화훈장을수훈하였고2025년10월제7회Baku국제건축상3위에입상하였다.

또한서울대,홍익대,연세대,중앙대대학원,경기대건축(대학원)등에서대우/겸임교수와디렉터를역임하였으며2016년미국조지아텍건축대학초청크리틱교수(GuestCriticProf.inArchitecture/GeorgiaInstituteofTechnology,Atlanta,USA)와호서대건축과석좌교수로재직하였다.주요국제건축작품초대전시는2009년세계건축디자인올림픽초대전,2010년미국하버드건축대학원(GSD)“NewTrajectiories“초대전,2011UIATokyoForum”10,000WorldArchitects“초대전,2016년한.중.일대표건축가“서축전(書築展)”에초대되어건축작품집“천년의침묵”(TheWeightofThousandsBlackness)을출간하였고,2025년09월건축작품집“TheTrajectoryoftheSoul,Byung-Kil,Bae”영혼의궤적,건축가배병길(한/영)을출간하였다.

사회활동으로제30대한국건축가협회(KIA)회장,제10대한국건축단체연합(FIKA)대표회장과2017UIASeoulWorldArchitectsCongress(2017서울세계건축대회)대회장으로대회를성공적으로개최하였다.현재미국건축가협회(HAIA),일본건축가협회(HJIA),베트남건축가협회(HFVNAA),한국최초태국왕립건축가협회명예회원으로위촉되었으며,UIA세계건축가연맹국제공모전상임위원(SteeringMembers)으로임기완료후UIA로부터감사장을수여받았다.또한서울시디자인위원회,건축위원회,건축정책위원회,도시건축공동위원회위원,공공건축가등으로약10년동안활동하였으며,2019년부터4년동안1대,2대경상북도총괄건축가로봉직하면서경북건축문화발전에노력하였다.현재한국건축가협회/한국건축단체연합(FIKA)명예회장,UCLA한국총동문회회장으로활동하고있다.

현재배병길건축연구소대표로재직하면서그의건축은자연,인간,건축의상호관계성에관한“염치의미학”이라는건축철학과이론으로작업하고있으며,“관계를넘어윤리로”건축적사고를확장하고있다.그는건축을“땅이라는자연에인간의언어를새기는행위”로정의하고,또한“건축은인간이자연에게말을건내는(거는)행위“로인식하면서건축작업을지속하고있다.

In1990,hefoundedBaeByung-KilArchitects&Associates,throughwhichhehascompletednumeroussignificantworks,includingtheYokohamaBuilding,KukjeGallery,GalleryHyundai,HouseofSeclusion,MonasticResidenceMukdang,Hagui-jae,SongseolMemorialHallandLectureBuildingatGimcheonHighSchool,GimcheonCityMuseum,andtheTongui-dongTSCMasterPlan.
InJuly2025,hiscollaborativedesignwithHeerimArchitects&PlannerswontheMido1stApartmentRedevelopmentDesignCompetitioninBanpo-dong,Seocho-gu,Seoul.InSeptember2025,hisjointproposalwithSiaplanArchitectsandthreeotherfirmsplacedthirdintheDaeguMetropolitanCityHallInternationalDesignCompetition,althoughtheteamdeclinedtheaward.

Throughhisarchitecturalworks,Baehasreceivednumerousprestigioushonors,includingtheKoreanEnvironmentalandCulturalAward,theSeoulArchitectureAward,theKoreaArchitecturalCultureAward,theKIAArchitecturalDesignAward,theAh-ChunSpecialArchitectureAward,theMinisterofCulture,SportsandTourismCommendation,andtheFIKAMeritAward,amongothers.In2019,hewasdecoratedbytheKoreangovernmentwiththeOk-Gwan(Jade)OrderofCulturalMeritforhisdistinguishedcontributionstonationalculturaldevelopment.InOctober2025,hewasawardedthirdplaceinthe7thBakuInternationalArchitectureAward.

BaehasservedasanadjunctorvisitingprofessoratSeoulNationalUniversity,HongikUniversity,YonseiUniversity,Chung-AngUniversity,andKyonggiUniversity,andasadirectorinvariousarchitecturalprograms.In2016,hewasinvitedasaGuestCriticProfessorattheSchoolofArchitecture,GeorgiaInstituteofTechnology(Atlanta,USA),andheldthepositionofEndowedProfessorinArchitectureatHoseoUniversity.

Baehasplayedaleadingroleinthearchitecturalcommunityasthe30thPresidentoftheKoreanInstituteofArchitects(KIA),10thPresidentoftheFederationofInstitutesofKoreanArchitects(FIKA),andPresidentofthe2017UIASeoulWorldArchitectsCongress,whichhesuccessfullyorganized.HeisanHonoraryMemberoftheAmericanInstituteofArchitects(HAIA),theJapanInstituteofArchitects(HJIA),theVietnamAssociationofArchitects(HFVNAA),andnotably,thefirstKoreanHonoraryMemberoftheAssociationofSiameseArchitectsunderRoyalPatronage(Thailand).

건축가배병길은동서양문화의가장큰차이는사고를전달하는언어와직접수단인동양의붓과먹,서양의펜과잉크사용을가장뚜렷한대별요소로인식하였다.먹색의무한함과영원성의인식은자연의일부로서불을머금고생성된“먹”이라는물질이형태만달리할뿐그의고향은수천년전부터자연이었던것을알고있기때문이다.그인식은먹색을기저색으로하여책전체가무채색스펙트럼으로되어있는연유이기도하다.디자인기본개념은동양의미와사유의근원인“숙정(肅靜)를위한비움“,“적막(寂寞)의간절함“,“극한외로움의갈망“을건축의간결함으로”고독한건축공간에초대”하려하였다.

책을만들면서이작품들을건축으로서의대상뿐이아니라걸어다니고만나고,열려있는,사람들이스며드는,실제의,그러나동시에건축가의철학적개념이실체화된지점들이무엇인지찾아보고자했다.학의재에서는기능으로서구획하는문이아니라자연을향해서열려있는문과자연을건축안으로끌어드리는여러틈들을찾아보았고수도원이었던묵당에서는숙연함이깔려있는좁은계단들에주목했으며김천고등학교예지관에서는학생들이지나다니고뛰어다니는길목,길목들,오래된것들과어우러진통로들을담아내고자했다.

사진작가김성수는건축물의공간을담아내는재현적사진이아니라깊은흑백적질감을통해서추상적인평면으로재현하고있으며이를통해서건축가배병길작업이가지고있는“건축너머의생각들”을담아내고자했다.
