건축가 배병길은 동서양 문화의 가장 큰 차이는 사고를 전달하는 언어와 직접 수단인 동양의 붓과 먹, 서양의 펜과 잉크 사용을 가장 뚜렷한 대별 요소로 인식하였다. 먹색의 무한함과 영원성의 인식은 자연의 일부로서 불을 머금고 생성된 “먹”이라는 물질이 형태만 달리할 뿐 그의 고향은 수천년 전부터 자연이었던 것을 알고 있기 때문이다. 그 인식은 먹색을 기저색으로 하여 책 전체가 무채색 스펙트럼으로 되어있는 연유이기도 하다. 디자인 기본 개념은 동양의 미와 사유의 근원인 “숙정(肅靜)를 위한 비움“, “적막(寂寞)의 간절함“, “극한 외로움의 갈망“을 건축의 간결함으로 ”고독한 건축공간에 초대”하려 하였다.

국민대 디자인학과 정진렬 교수는 이 책은 건축가 배병길의 건축에서 자연과 인간, 건축의 관계를 포함하여 문과 계단, 통로를 다시 발견하고자 한다. “염치의 미학”으로 알려진 건축가 배병길은 “존재에서 관계로”, “관계를 넘어 윤리로”, “관계의 관계의 관계”로 나아감을 표방하며 건축행위를 하고 있다. 그는 자연, 인간, 건축, 시간의 경계에 대해서 근본적인 질문을 던지는 건축을 해나가고 있다.

책을 만들면서 이 작품들을 건축으로서의 대상뿐이 아니라 걸어 다니고 만나고, 열려있는, 사람들이 스며드는, 실제의, 그러나 동시에 건축가의 철학적 개념이 실체화된 지점들이 무엇인지 찾아보고자 했다. 학의재에서는 기능으로서 구획하는 문이 아니라 자연을 향해서 열려있는 문과 자연을 건축 안으로 끌어드리는 여러 틈들을 찾아보았고 수도원이었던 묵당에서는 숙연함이 깔려있는 좁은 계단들에 주목했으며 김천고등학교 예지관에서는 학생들이 지나다니고 뛰어다니는 길목, 길목들, 오래된 것들과 어우러진 통로들을 담아내고자 했다.

사진작가 김성수는 건축물의 공간을 담아내는 재현적 사진이 아니라 깊은 흑백적 질감을 통해서 추상적인 평면으로 재현하고 있으며 이를 통해서 건축가 배병길 작업이 가지고 있는 “건축 너머의 생각들” 을 담아내고자 했다.

중앙대졸업후,김중업건축연구소에서건축을시작하였으며,미국UCLA건축대학원에서건축학/디자인석사학위(MasterofArchitecture,2ndProfessionalDegree)를취득하였다.
1990년배병길건축연구소를개설하고요코하마빌딩,국제화랑,갤러리현대,은둔의집,수도원묵당,학의재,김천중/고등학교송설역사관과예지관,김천시립문화박물관,통의동TSC계획을하였고,최근2025년07월서울서초구반포동“미도1차재건축설계공모전”에주)희림과공동참가당선되었으며,09월대구광역시신청사국제공모전에주)시아플랜외3곳과공동참가3위입상거부하였다.여러건축작품을통하여대한민국환경문화상,서울시건축상,한국건축문화대상,한국건축가협회건축작품상,아천특별건축상,문화체육부장관표창,FIKA공로상외다수건축상을수상하였으며,2019년대한민국정부로부터국가문화발전유공자로옥관문화훈장을수훈하였고2025년10월제7회Baku국제건축상3위에입상하였다.

또한서울대,홍익대,연세대,중앙대대학원,경기대건축(대학원)등에서대우/겸임교수와디렉터를역임하였으며2016년미국조지아텍건축대학초청크리틱교수(GuestCriticProf.inArchitecture/GeorgiaInstituteofTechnology,Atlanta,USA)와호서대건축과석좌교수로재직하였다.주요국제건축작품초대전시는2009년세계건축디자인올림픽초대전,2010년미국하버드건축대학원(GSD)“NewTrajectiories“초대전,2011UIATokyoForum”10,000WorldArchitects“초대전,2016년한.중.일대표건축가“서축전(書築展)”에초대되어건축작품집“천년의침묵”(TheWeightofThousandsBlackness)을출간하였고,2025년09월건축작품집“TheTrajectoryoftheSoul,Byung-Kil,Bae”영혼의궤적,건축가배병길(한/영)을출간하였다.

사회활동으로제30대한국건축가협회(KIA)회장,제10대한국건축단체연합(FIKA)대표회장과2017UIASeoulWorldArchitectsCongress(2017서울세계건축대회)대회장으로대회를성공적으로개최하였다.현재미국건축가협회(HAIA),일본건축가협회(HJIA),베트남건축가협회(HFVNAA),한국최초태국왕립건축가협회명예회원으로위촉되었으며,UIA세계건축가연맹국제공모전상임위원(SteeringMembers)으로임기완료후UIA로부터감사장을수여받았다.또한서울시디자인위원회,건축위원회,건축정책위원회,도시건축공동위원회위원,공공건축가등으로약10년동안활동하였으며,2019년부터4년동안1대,2대경상북도총괄건축가로봉직하면서경북건축문화발전에노력하였다.현재한국건축가협회/한국건축단체연합(FIKA)명예회장,UCLA한국총동문회회장으로활동하고있다.

현재배병길건축연구소대표로재직하면서그의건축은자연,인간,건축의상호관계성에관한“염치의미학”이라는건축철학과이론으로작업하고있으며,“관계를넘어윤리로”건축적사고를확장하고있다.그는건축을“땅이라는자연에인간의언어를새기는행위”로정의하고,또한“건축은인간이자연에게말을건내는(거는)행위“로인식하면서건축작업을지속하고있다.

In1990,hefoundedBaeByung-KilArchitects&Associates,throughwhichhehascompletednumeroussignificantworks,includingtheYokohamaBuilding,KukjeGallery,GalleryHyundai,HouseofSeclusion,MonasticResidenceMukdang,Hagui-jae,SongseolMemorialHallandLectureBuildingatGimcheonHighSchool,GimcheonCityMuseum,andtheTongui-dongTSCMasterPlan.
InJuly2025,hiscollaborativedesignwithHeerimArchitects&PlannerswontheMido1stApartmentRedevelopmentDesignCompetitioninBanpo-dong,Seocho-gu,Seoul.InSeptember2025,hisjointproposalwithSiaplanArchitectsandthreeotherfirmsplacedthirdintheDaeguMetropolitanCityHallInternationalDesignCompetition,althoughtheteamdeclinedtheaward.

Throughhisarchitecturalworks,Baehasreceivednumerousprestigioushonors,includingtheKoreanEnvironmentalandCulturalAward,theSeoulArchitectureAward,theKoreaArchitecturalCultureAward,theKIAArchitecturalDesignAward,theAh-ChunSpecialArchitectureAward,theMinisterofCulture,SportsandTourismCommendation,andtheFIKAMeritAward,amongothers.In2019,hewasdecoratedbytheKoreangovernmentwiththeOk-Gwan(Jade)OrderofCulturalMeritforhisdistinguishedcontributionstonationalculturaldevelopment.InOctober2025,hewasawardedthirdplaceinthe7thBakuInternationalArchitectureAward.
