이 책은 문학 및 영상예술에 대해 균형 잡힌 시각을 갖도록 하는 것을 목표로 집필되었다. 필자들은 문자미디어와 영상미디어의 융합을 동시대 한국예술의 두드러진 특징으로 파악했고 그 점을 최대한 반영하여야 한다는 신념으로 가급적이면 동시대의 텍스트를 고르고 최신의 이론을 적용하여 집필했다.
독자들은 이 책을 학술서로 들어가기 이전의 입문서 내지는 전문서적의 이해를 돕는 참고서, 또는 학교의 울타리를 넘어 일반교양서로 활용해도 좋을 것이다.

부산대학교의건학이념은진리,자유,봉사이다.따라서우리대학은지난세기교양교육의목표를지성과인성의조화에두고대학생이함양해야할기본소양을교육해왔다.새로운밀
레니엄의도래와함께창의성을깨우고사회성을회복하기위한감성교육이날로중요해짐에따라,2001년에처음으로국어국문학과가주관하는교양강의‘문학과영상예술’이개설되어오늘에이른다.그리고이제20년간부대인(釜大人)의감성교육을담당해온이과목의네번째교과서가전면적으로새로씌어독자들과만나게되었다.『문학과영상예술의이해』는해당과목의이전교과서는물론,기존에출판된교과서들과도몇가지점에서다르다.
먼저국문과개설과목임에도문학에치우치지않고문학및영상예술에대해균형잡힌시각을갖도록하는것을목표로했다.이교과서의필진은문자미디어와영상미디어의융합을우리시대문화의두드러진특징으로파악했고그점을새로운교과서가반영해야한다는관점
으로가급적이면동시대의텍스트를고르고최신의이론을적용하여집필했다.앞으로개정판
이허락된다면이점은계속강화될것이다.따라서독자들은『문학과영상예술의이해』를학
술서로들어가기전의입문서내지는전문서적의이해를돕는참고서,또는대학의울타리를
넘어일반교양서로활용해도좋을것이다.
두번째,각장의내용을점층적으로구성하되유기적인연결또한고려했다.한학기의강
의스케줄에맞춰단계적으로서술함으로써학생들이이론에서응용으로,기초에서심화로
지식을점차확장하도록했고한장을읽다가관련된부분이다른장에나오면찾아볼수있도록참조표시(☞)를해두었다.물론이런독해방식은이책을열심히공부한학생들이라면금방눈치챘겠지만뉴미디어의하이퍼링크기능을올드미디어인종이책에응용한것이다.
세번째,학습자의흥미를진작하고교과서를확장적으로활용하도록하기위해아래와같이
여러가지장치들을새롭게추가했다.

§학습목표:각장을학습하고달성해야하는목표를제시하여학습자스스로가강의의맥락을파악하고성취도를점검할수있도록했다.
§핵심용어:본문에등장한핵심어를각장의말미와부록으로따로정리하여학습자가복습을하거나교수자가지난강의에서다룬내용을환기하는데활용할수
있도록했다.
§자세히읽기:학습자가본문의내용을숙고할수있도록확장적인독서를제안했다.
§연습문제:문제해결을통해학습자스스로가각장에대한이해도를점검할수도있고교수자가개별과제나모둠과제로활용할수있도록했다.
§더공부할자료:교과서에서배운바를확장하여보고서를쓰거나개별연구에활용할수있도록관련자료를소개했다.
§부록:본문중에굵은글씨로표시한문학용어,영화용어의정확한의미를학습자가찾아볼수있도록용어해설을부록으로정리했다.
이교과서는크게문학과영상예술의기본개념을설명한제1부,장르와관습을설명한제
2부,작품분석과비평을겸한제3부로나뉘어져있다.
제1부는문학과영상예술의접합면에대한이론적,역사적탐색이다.제1장에서는영상문학의기본개념을설명하고미디어환경의변화를중심으로한국문학과한국영화의상호작용을살펴본다.제2장에서는각색의기본개념과이론을소개한뒤시나리오와소설의구조분석을통해각색양상을관찰할수있도록했다.제3장에서는음악과사운드가영상문학의서사에어떻게기여하는지를다룬다.
제2부는문학과영상예술의하위장르를비교하고각장르의특성과관습을작품을통해살
펴본다.제4장은시와영화의친연성과차이를다루고시가모티프가된영화를분석한다.제5장은역사인식과역사재현이문학과영화에서각기어떻게달라지는지를작품을예로들어구체적으로설명한다.제6장은디지털미디어가문학과영상에미친영향과그로인해파생된뉴미디어예술양식에대해자세히설명한다.제7장은한국문예영화의장르적특징을설명하고영화사적맥락에서이장르의의의를고찰한다.제8장은멜로드라마장르의특징과장르적
관습이한국영화에서어떻게적용되고변형되어왔는지를살펴본다.
제3부는우리시대의한국문학과한국영화에대한비평이다.제9장에서는한국의청년문학과청춘영화의변천을살펴본뒤,오늘날의문학과영화가청년문제를어떻게반영하고있는지독해한다.제10장은페미니즘영화이론의전개를살펴본뒤,여성/소수자의시선으로문학과영화텍스트를비판적으로분석한다.제11장은공간의인문학적개념을제시하고문학과영상예술이공간을형상화하는방식을작품을통해구체적으로살펴본다.제12장은학습자가이강의를통해얻은비평의렌즈를갈고닦아문학과영상예술에대한글쓰기를실천해볼수있는방법을제시한다.
그동안수많은학생들이‘문학과영상예술’강의를거쳐갔고올해는이과목이개설된지20주년이다.그러다보니이책의필진중일부는과거이과목의학생이었으나지금은담당교수가되어있다.우리는이책을함께집필하면서수차례의편집회의를통해서로의강의노하우를교환했고,학생이었던때로돌아가학생의입장에서좋은교과서란어떠해야하는가를함께고민했다.그렇게함께한시간덕분에이교과서는이전의교과서들보다더정교해졌고더흥미로워졌다.
