생명공학작물에대한올바른이해

이책은2009년에출간된『식탁위의생명공학』(개정판)을영어로옮긴것이다.『식탁위의생명공학』은단순히생명공학작물을소개하고개념을이해하는데그치지않고구체적인예시와함께그원리와활용현황까지를다룬책이다.생명공학이우리가먹는음식에얼마나기여하고있는지,또생명공학작물로만든식품에대한잘못된인식이얼마나우리의뇌리에각인되어있는지를조목조목짚어과학적으로설명한다.이를테면우리나라에서현재실행중인GMO표시제,즉유전자변형생물체표시제에대한설명도수록되어있다.이제도는소비자의알권리와선택의자유를보장하기위한표시제도지만많은사람들이이를오인하면서생명공학식품이유해하다는인식은깊어지기만했다.그러나실제로생명공학작물과기존작물사이에는유의할만한생물학적차이점이없다.다만다른특성을가지도록만든것일뿐이다.

식탁위의생명공학영문판이나오기까지

중학교재학시절,진정한적성을찾기위해고민하던중서울대학교응용생물학부최양도교수님의강의,“식탁위의생명공학”을들을기회가있었습니다.강의내용은같은제목의책을기반으로했는데,강의를들은후처음으로한학문분야에매료되었습니다.강의를통해유전자재조합기술의개념과실제응용사례등에대해배울수있었는데,DNA같은생명의가장기본적인구성단위에미세한변화를주는것이한생물체의형질에결정적인영향을미치는것이흥미로웠습니다.또한유전자재조합기술을통해생물체에유용한형질을발현시킨응용사례에대해배우면서현대의생명공학은단순한학문을넘어기아,질병등세계문제를해결하기위한첫걸음으로보였습니다.
그와동시에보다많은사람들과이런지식을공유하면좋겠다고생각했습니다.생명공학기술은관련학자들만의전유물이아니라현대사회의모든구성원들과직접적으로연관이있으며,함께살아가는세계의여러문제를해결하기위해모두가관심을가져야한다는생각으로『식탁위의생명공학』을영어로번역하게되었습니다.현대사회에서생명공학이어떤의미를가지는지많은사람들이알게되길바라며같은관심사를가진고등학교친구들과작업을거쳤고출판을하게되었습니다.
